[Geoserver-devel] Summer of Code ideas.

I started a summer of code ideas page, just to get things started, we should try to have something really fleshed out right when the projects are announced, and to do more outreach to actually get students. Please add your ideas, this is just a first crack to get the juices flowing.

Wouldn’t be nice to put the new admin gui/framework in this SoC ideas?!..

Do you really want a student to write that
As far as I know we are still stuck on a Spring 2 / Wicket / GWT front ... now a summer of code project to to do a small section of the configuration in each technology so we can make a decision may be useful?

Looks good, especially the H2 Spatial stuff. I also have an Amazon
contact who can add Geoserver to the SimpleDB beta programme if/when
you need it.

The list looks good. From personal experience, the Summer of Code ideas list is extremely helpful. I largely ignored projects that didn't have at least some sort of recommendations list. It takes long enough to figure out what some of the projects even do -- I must have spent at least a few hours simply trying to get a rough idea of the available OSGeo projects. With no knowledge of the Geoserver architecture, it would have been difficult to put forth a decent proposal without the recommendations list. The JTileCache idea was good because it was self-contained and seemed feasible.

With that in mind, I like the project list so far. I was about to say that the SQL Server datastore has a barrier to entry, but it looks like Microsoft is giving the Express edition spatial support as well? (If that is true, I would be in support of the recommendation, since I am currently developing on SQL Server.)

Also, I am not sure what the overall OSGeo Summer of Code landing is going to be, but it would helpful if there was a short description of OSGeo and each available project on that page. Keep in mind that the vast majority of Summer of Code students have never heard of the organization, or any of the projects. Making the projects seem accessible and interesting is important -- otherwise all of the geo standards, formats, and jargon can be surprisingly intimidating for student that is debating if Geoserver is worth a proposal.

One idea that I would find very useful… I am using 52North WPS in conjunction with geoserver. The biggest performance issue is when the WPS requests data from the WFS. The WFS converts it to GML and then the WPS marshalls it back to a feature collection. If there was a way to integrate them both so that a local geoserver could directly pass a feature collection to the WPS without having to use GML that would greatly improve the overall performance.

Just an idea… David

Awesome, thanks for the great advice Chris. We got our act together kind of late last year, and I had wanted to put more work in to making the landing page accessible but when I got to it applications were just about closed. So this year I want to get it on it earlier. Feel free to add to the wiki with more overview, ect.

I believe with SQL Server if there's not a freely available one we can probably find a way to stand something up for someone to use.

Thanks for the SimpleDB contact offer Rob, I got on the beta, but it'd be good to be able to fast track a student who's working on it.

best regards,

Chris

One thing that I miss in that page is some clear statement of
what we expect from the student. In particular, something saying that:
* SoC is paid and it's a full time work, so another work,
relax and whatnot are banned. I mean, a short vacation ok, but
you cannot work on the SoC project part time or disappear for
   one month solid
* whatever work assumes the basic technology knowledge is there,
again, nobody asks the student to be a pro with GIS, but
he has to be proficient with java/javascript or whatever
is the basic technologies used in the project
* the student is expected to interact closely with the mentor
_and_ with the community, work on a public svn repository,
and so on. That is, play the open source developer and learn
   to be one.
* ask the student to make a detailed plan about what he's
going to do, perform technology evaluation and whatnot
before starting. This would be also a good way to identify
students with a decent likeliness of getting the work
   done
* finally, warn about the mid term evaluation and that we'll
simply kick out students that did not provide the deliverables
specified in their plan... this should make them think
twice before making an over ambitous plan

Hum, anything else you may want to add?
Cheers
Andrea

Ah yeah, I was thinking about WPS stuff, and some sort of better integration with 52N would be really great. There's a lot of buzz about WPS and potential integration lately, so we should see how that plays out before making it a summer of code project. But if that's successful it could be great to get a student in there making some new processes, as that may be a nice self contained project.

best regards,

Chris
