[Geoserver-devel] Time to declare JDK 17 as supported, rather than experimental?

Hi all,
now that the bin and windows installers should be working out of the box on a Java 17,
is it time to remove the “experimental” qualification from the production page?

“Java 17 - GeoServer 2.22.x and above (OpenJDK tested, experimental only)”

I would also add “Java 21 - GeoServer 25.x and above (OpenJDK tested, experimental only)”
since we have the builds, but not a widespread usage.
I believe GeoServer Cloud defaults on it, but the number of deploys is limited.

Hi Jody,
good point! The Marlin fix was backported to 2.25.x, but not to 2.24.x.
It could be done with the 2.26.0 release and extended to 2.25.x I guess?
There is nothing else Java 17 specific that needs to be done, and in case one has
trouble, there are the JVM flags documented in the guide that can be added to work around it.

I was thinking about these two pages:

Does not have a mention of a java version, don’t think it needs one. The minimum java version
is considered in the second page you mentioned.

I would make the Java 17 line look like:

“Java 17 - GeoServer 2.25.4 and above (OpenJDK tested), but also 2.22.x and above in an experimental way (the windows installer and bin packages need tweaks)”

or just simplify the message and say:

"Java 17 - GeoServer 2.25.4 and above, (OpenJDK tested)

I would also add a new line:

“Java 21 - GeoServer 25.x and above (OpenJDK tested, experimental only)”

since we have the builds, but not a widespread usage.

The download page archive tab lists each version and version of Java used. They have not yet changed on a point release.

I don’t know how that page is generated but… if it’s a big problem,
we can just declare Java 17 supported for 26.x onwards and simplify things.
