[Geoserver-devel] Update Jetty, how could I help?

Hi,

Geoserver 2.8 seems to run on Jetty 9.3.3 on Windows as I wrote earlier today http://sourceforge.net/p/geoserver/mailman/message/34538787/.

I wonder what should be done for updating the Jetty version that is included in the official releases. The start scripts need editing but is there anything else? If that is something relatively simple I can try if I could make an updated zip installer with Jetty 9.3.3 if it is a good version to use.

The jetty minimal install files are found here:
https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/tree/master/src/release/jetty

In order to update those would have to be replaced too. To test the
packacing, run at least one this:

mvn clean install -DskipTests -Prelease

to get all the jars built, and then to test your packacking, run:

mvn assembly:attached -nsu

and you will get the -bin package, from which the windows installer is
derived, in target/release (if memory serves me right).

The "hard" part is to figure out the minimum set of jar and config files
that make Jetty run,
keeping it small but functional.

Btw, personally I don't have any objection to moving to a minimized Tomcat
if needs be... of course
it's a larger change, but could be interesting for those that want to run
GeoServer in production
with just the windows installer.
That said, I'll take a Jetty upgrade any day, instead of nothing (like,
forget about me mentioning
Tomcat if that gets in the way getting anything done)

Cheers
Andrea

We had a volunteer look at updating the dependency at the code sprint, they found some compilation problem to fix up for our Start application (used for testing ).

Hi Jukka, Hi all,

i think i got it, of course with your help.

After doing what you told me (copy geoserver directory to webapps) *i have a
WEB-INF/web.xml which i can modfy* as written here:

I did that and everything is fine

Thank's again to you and the other helpers.

btw: the embedded jetty is some version 6 i think. 4 or more years old. And
i wanted to use my running jetty 9.3 instead of this old version. But never
planned to change the embedded version. I'm not a jetty developer, i'm happy
when it's running out of the box.

Regards
walter
