GeoServer pt-BR Translation

Hi All,

How are you? I was chatting with the GeoNode-BR WhatsApp Group today, and they were saying that they had translated GeoNode to pt-BR using AI.

So I asked if there was any way to do this for GeoServer, and they said they had already done it, so I would like to know from you what is the best way to include this translation in the official version of GeoServer, because the version that is currently available with GeoServer has words in English, Portuguese and Spanish, and I would like to fix that.

I look forward to your recommendations.

Best regards,

Hello Fernando and thank you!

I am not sure what the AI angle is? Has the GeoNode-BR community checked the result and are they happy with it?

The procedure to submit translations is here: Translating GeoServer — GeoServer 2.27.x Developer Manual

We moved from Log in · Transifex GeoServer @ OSGeo Weblate (so an OSGeo User ID is used to submit a new translation).

Hello Fernando,

There are two ways:

  • Either you work directly with the property files in the GeoServer repository. The main problem here is that untranslated items must be found by spotting the missing keys in the files for Brazilian.
  • Or, as mentioned by Jody, you can use the weblate instance of OsGeo. In this case, you can for each component of GeoServer download a file containing only the unfinished and not translated text for your language.

In the same menu you should be able to upload back the translation.

Regarding the usage of the AI for this kind of translation, I have some doubt on the results you will have: AI relies on contextual information to give the best result. If for the translation of a whole document it can make sense, translation of isolated sentences which will appear in an application could IMO give strange result.

We already have these errors with hand made translation. For example the English word “feature” have to meaning based on the context: it can be a functionality (like in “Enable this feature”) or an entity with a geometry and attributes (like in Web Feature Service).

In Weblate there is the possibility to do automatic translation using the own technology of Weblate or using DeepL and to add them as a suggestion to be reviewed by someone else. If you want we can give it a try on a component of GeoServer for your language.
