[Geoserver-users] ECW with Geoserver

Hi

Can I use a ECW file with geoserver to publish the image?

Any limitation that we need to be aware of?

Thanks

No not allowed without buying a license from ERDAS, see:

Hi,

Yes, you can use ECW files with geoserver.
As far as I know, there are no technical limitations but performance could be an issue when you’re using a lot of small ECWs.
There are some license restrictions. You can check the geoserver docs for more info on that.

Sjoerd

Longer answer:

Yes, you can use GeoServer to serve ECW imagery via the GDAL
integration extension. As it has already been pointed out, you need to
have a valid ECW license from ERDAS but this is not related to
GeoServer, it is due to the fact that we are talking about a
proprietary format for which the decoder is not available for free for
server side deployments.

Simone.

Thanks all.

Good and bad, good we can serve : bad we need to get a license (I suppose it will cost a heap).

I have to figure out how we can get away from this issue., well thats my headache now.

Cheers

Robert,
unless you want to buy a license of ECW, I see various options:

- convert to a mosaic/pyramid of tiff
- convert to bigtiff (there is still some work needed before
supporting bigtiff with overviews in geoserver/geotools)
- check other wavelet based format costs, mainly I think JPEG 2000.

Ciao,
Simone.
