[Geoserver-users] GeoServer and MapServer

Hi All,

Many people have ask me about diferences between GeoServer and MapServer, but I have a little experience with MapServer and it’s very hard to me to make this comparation.

I would like to post this comparation in my blog, not to talk which is better, but only for to differenciate the tools.

Maybe here isn’t the better place for my ask, but I decided to make it here.

Fernando,

From my basic knowledge of both: GeoServer operates as a WMS/WFS server built on Java GeoTools. MapServer has WMS/WFS-server capabilities but can act as a client too.

Though I will say that since that time we've made some good strides on stability and speed, especially with the WMS. And are slowly getting to most of the features of MapServer, like we recently got templated output, which was one of the main advantages of MapServer. More recently we've been focusing on the 'geo web' functionality, with really good KML support, as well as GeoRSS and GeoJSON output, and some energy spent on making tiling clients work better with GeoServer. MapServer remains rock solid for WMS production environments though, and also has support through its MapScript extensions to access a lot of its functionality through scripting languages like python and php.
