[Geoserver-users] Geoserver - Weather and Sea Data ?

Hi,

This is relatively new to me so please do bear with me. I want to request
weather and sea related data like

Wind Wave Height (m)
Wind Wave Period (s)
Air Pressure (hPa)
Wind Speed @ 10m (kts)
Precipitation (mm)
Ice Cover

and some more data from geoserver wms well I only got this much into my
head.

I search in many places and found people are getting data from NOAA and
Weather.gov but I tried searching all over the sites but only found data
related to US. How does this actually work.

I get data in some format and save it to a DB ? Even if I could find a tut
would have helped me but I couldn't find any.

Please guide me through this um totally lost here.

Two things
Geoserver and how it works actually
and Weather - Sea Data

Thanks

WMS (Web Map Service) is a webservice that provides maps. The client specifies the region (extent), layers etc & the server draws the map as an image, & sends the image for the client to display.

There is a companion web service, WFS (Web Feature Service) which allows a client to request the data, which it generally displays locally on a map.

Geoserver provides both of these services, as do many other applications.

A third service (note- there are still more) is SOS (Sensor Observation Service). This is not as well supported, as sensor observations are not typically GIS data, but contain time series data, generally from instruments like climate & hydrometric services.

These data are also provided as files in various custom formats, that you need to download & open with appropriate software. Geoserver is not often used to supply such data, though it can serve WFS for use as a discovery service for the stations or instruments.

At http://earth.nullschool.net/ you can see an interactive map of wind & wave data. Click on “Earth” - bottom left - to see the menu, then click on “about” for information on what data is displayed & where it is obtained.

For ice data, I suggest you try polarview or the NATICE centre - both provide maps via WMS as well as vector data via WFS…

Cheers

Brent Wood

Thanks Brent for such a quick response. I got your point. Though I am trying to browse through all the websites that the nullscholl has mentioned I am not able to find data for the world. Its all US and only US

Do you have any other page reference explaining this maybe on how to extract data. I know its a bit more but I am stuck.
