[Geoserver-users] Global Styles not showing in preview

Hi folks,

Anyone else seeing this – if a style is not in a workspace (so it can be used globally), the layer preview errors?

If I move the style into the same workspace as the layer, it works fine.

I’m on GS 2.18.

No, it’s new to me, I use global styles all the time.
What’s special about your setup? Thinking out loud, what GeoServer version, which plugins installed, what security setup?

Hi Andrea,

I’m using the geosolutionsit Docker – 2.18 like this:

docker run -d --name geoserver2 -v /home/ec2-user/reports:/var/local/geoserver/reports -p 80:8080 -e GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR=/var/local/geoserver/reports geosolutionsit/geoserver

I’m creating an isolated workspace for the data. The styles are not assigned to a workspace so they can be used by multiple isolated workspaces. No extra plugins. No security changes at this point.

Ah, that explains it. The layer preview GetMap requests are using the global WMS endpoint, if the style being edited is not in a workspace
Workspace isolated layers are not reachable there (they are only from the workspace specific service).

Isolated workspaces usage is pretty uncommon, typically used to publish the same INSPIRE theme multiple times from the same server (or so I hear, I never used them myself).
Not surprised this did not come up before.

Can you write a fix? If so it would be in this area:

Not entirely trivial mind, the code is already trying to setup a workspace specific service if the style is in a workspace, it should
also try to recognize the possibility of using a layer (and then check its workspace), or layer group that is in a workspace (but it might also not be).
