is there a way to get from GeoServer the next available feature Id for a certain feature type without creating a feature instance? so I can create a feature instance with that id, then perform a modification on it, all in the same transaction?

I guess I'm not quite understanding the issue... what's the point in creating the feature with a "valid" id and then modifying it instead of just creating the feature with the attribute values you want and issueing just the insert?
