Hmm... you're the second to report problems, and it seems the security
manage is in action here too.
Apparently Debian/Ubuntu do ship Tomcat with security manager enabled
and pretty locked down, preventing Geoserver from working.
I don't have time to test on my local Ubuntu box, but can you check this document and see if it helps?

http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.0-doc/security-manager-howto.html

Let me know how it goes.

Hi list,

I can confirm that the security manager is playing up:
On my ubuntu edgy server I modified /etc/init.d/tomcat5 to disable the
security manager
(line 28/29
# Use the Java security manager? (yes/no)
TOMCAT5_SECURITY=yes)
by setting it to no. Then I redeployed my war (removing the geoserver
dir in webapps and putting the war back in.) Next I restarted tomcat and
behold geoserver was deployed and running.
This is obviously not the best way to solve this issue, but at least we
now know it is the security manager.

Regards,
Steven

Yeah, with Debian being already common on the server side and Ubuntu
increasing its penetration I guess sooner or later we'll have to try
and fix this one too.
