[Geoserver-users] Login form not displaying on admin console page

Hi all,

For some reason, the username/password form has disappeared from the admin console (see image). I have been trying to configure the authentication chains, but I’m not sure why this would make the html form not display. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Thanks for taking the time for a GeoServer newbie.

Ouch. I can confirm this with Firefox:

Todd, please check the GeoServer logs for any relevant error messages. We are especially looking for exception stack traces that suggest that the initialisation of a GeoServer component has failed. Especially especially classes with Security in their name.

What plugins are you using?

What Java version are you using? Only Java 8 is supported for this GeoServer version.

What is you servlet container (Tomcat? Jetty?) and version? What platform? Linux or Windows? Linux distribution and version? Anything unusual about your platform?

Thanks for the reply, Ben. I’ll try to provide more information. I’m running Tomcat 8.0.23 with JDK 8 on linux (note sure what version). They only plugin I’ve installed is MBStyles. Everything is hosted by a third party and, as far as I can tell, it was configured correctly (it was working fine earlier, after all). I’m looking at the logs and there are a few warnings regarding security:

17-Apr-2018 21:17:52.304 WARNING [localhost-startStop-1] org.geoserver.platform.GeoServerExtensions.checkContext Extension lookup 'GeoServerSecurityProvider', but ApplicationContext is unset.

…and farther down…

17 Apr 21:17:53 WARN [security.impl] - Invalid rule *.r=*, when namespace is * then also layer must be *. Skipping rule *.r=*

Let me know if there’s other specific information I can provide. Thanks much.

Hi,
funny, I was looking at the auth form code just yesterday, to figure out why the logout button was not visible when using
auths other than form.
Login and logout forms are pluggable and will disappear based on the configured auth filters in the “/web/**” chain.
If that chain does not contain the form one, they will be gone from the UI

Interesting! I wonder why they built it that way. I’ll do my best to reconfigure the “/web/**” authentication chain and hopefully this will solve the problem, though it’s slightly irritating that I can no longer do this from the admin console, since I’m effectively locked out. Thank you for the tip!

That's pretty simple, because if you removed the form auth there is no
point in having those buttons, they would not work at all :slight_smile:
If you have another auth, it should have its own UI that does the right
calls in order to log you out (which are not at all the same as the form
auth).

And yes, working with the security subsystem can be pretty painful, it’s rich, but also full of thorns,
so when playing with it take care and backup the security subdir of the data directory :wink:

This is good advice, especially with my tendency to break things :). I’m searching for where exactly to reconfigure filter chains… would this be in the applicationContext.xml as noted in the docs (I can’t actually find this file)? Obviously, I’m not trying to add a new, custom button, so should I then be looking in config.xml at the top of the security directory? Thank you.

Hi Todd,
nope, it’s not there, it’s in the security folder of the data dir… I believe in geoserver_data_dir/security/config.xml
The docs you’re referring to are developer documentation for programming a new authentication filter, it’s not user documentation.

That’s pretty simple, because if you removed the form auth there is no point in having those buttons, they would not work at all :slight_smile:
If you have another auth, it should have its own UI that does the right calls in order to log you out (which are not at all the same as the form auth).
