I found the cause for this error message.
First I opened webadmin interface. Then I clicked 'Layer Preview', then 'Openlayers' at the 'sf:sfdem' line. What I got was the error I reported. Let me tell where it came from:
I have a habbit to rename war package according to the version, like gs202 instead of geoserver. But the styler wouldn't work with gs202, so I created a symbolic link called geoserver refering to gs202. After that I tried to preview layers with address http://localhost:8080/geoserver/. That gives me the error. But if I try with the address http://localhost:8080/gs202/, layer preview works, but the styler doesn't, it wont find the capabilities doc.
Obviously I have to get rid of my habbit to rename geoserver packages. It's just that I am often running several versions of Geoserver instances at a same Tomcat. Renaming them with a version is practical.
