[Geoserver-users] NetCDF Support

It seems I have seen a lot about improved/new NetCDF support in GeoServer change logs, release, notes, etc. lately. However, I don’t seem to be able to uncover any documentation on how to actually use NetCDF as a data source in GeoServer.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Mike Grogan

Hello Mike,

currently the NetCDF stuff is not yet fully backported to GeoServer 2.4.x, so basically for a while building the NetCDF stuff and using it can be done only through some GeoServer forks around.

In any case, if you want to do some tests and start playing with it, here

https://github.com/geosolutions-it/educational/blob/master/multidim/en/get_started/geoserver_multidim_basics.rst

there are some instructions on how to build locally a GeoServer Multidimensional.

Also the same address contains a full opensource workshop demonstrating step-by-step the use of Multidimensional plugins other than import/export of NetCDF files.

A ready to use Tomcat with GeoServer Multidim is also available through the Multidim Workshop binaries here:

64 bit → http://geoserver.geo-solutions.it/downloads/training/windows/64/multidim/

32 bit → http://geoserver.geo-solutions.it/downloads/training/windows/32/multidim/

Hope this helps.

Hi Mike,
It looks like it’s a community module, so documentation may be lacking. I guess maybe it comes from these folks - http://geocentlabs.com/geoserver-netcdf-reader/ you could try asking them directly?

Cheers,
Jonathan

Actually, that's not the NetCDF module that is going to be used in
GeoServer.
It's sort of a sorry story, that group created a netcdf reader quite some
time ago, but they were very late (one year or more) to contribute it
to the community, at which point GeoSolutions already started working on
another NetCDF reader, which is the one that we are going
to use in the future, mostly because the geocent one lacks some features
and some performance optimizations, but also because we
are familiar with the one we wrote, while geocent has not stepped up to
provide long term support for their own

At the moment the NetCDF reader still has to be built from sources, let me
see if we can add it to the nightly builds shortly.

Cheers
Andrea

Oh I see, however the same documentation of the link is available as HTML on the docs.zip files of the workshop.

Dear Mike,
the link where too early, we are actively working on merging the basic
workshop with the advanced ones (multidim and , hence don't use the
provided links for the moment.

If you are following on the devel list, daniele is pushing the
remaining bits of the work + plus the GeoServer basic documentation.
The workshop is far more advanced & complete.
So, yeah, be patient a little bit more
