[Geoserver-users] Possible UI minor hiccup on creating shapefile datastore from web accessible folder?

I can create a shapefile datastore if the shapefile is in the geoserver_data_dir/data area.
And my preexisting shapefile datastore from http://maps.massgis.state.ma.us/test_data/TOWNS_POLY.SHP still works
but trying to create a new shapefile datastore from http://maps.massgis.state.ma.us/test_data/COUNTIES_POLY.SHP through the UI seems to insist on putting the “file://” back in front of the “http://” when I click the Save button and then can’t find the shapefile because the path is incorrect.
Screenshot attached. I notice http://docs.geoserver.org/2.0.x/en/user/data/shapefile.html doesn’t mention a shapefile sitting at a web accessible dir - maybe this is not longer supported through the UI?

Just something I noticed.

Sorry, forgot the screenshot before…

I guess we can relax the validation. However, accessing shapefiles
over the wire is going to be damn slow... why are you doing that?
Ah, do yo happen to have a ready to use shapefile that I can use
to see if the shapefile datastore actually still supports this
kind of access?

Cheers

I actually don't need it and I understand the concern about speed, and there's no conflict in the documentation so leaving it as it is
would make sense really, as sort of a GeoServer recommendation. I was just curious because I'd done it in the past and it still works for
that datastore.

You can grab a COUNTIES shapefile here if you want: http://maps.massgis.state.ma.us/test_data for example COUNTIES
