Hello,
I work with the geoserver release 1.5.3 embeded with geonetwork 2.1
I have update my server on ubuntu festy with tomcat5.5, Java1.5.0.11
to the gutsy.release with tomcat5.5 and java automaticaly updated to Java
1.5.0.13
After the update geonetwork and intermap work fine on my tomcat5.5 but not
the geoserver.
He do not want to start !
And after a day work of research, i still do not know why !
I have the message above :
31 oct. 2007 13:51:31 java.util.prefs.FileSystemPreferences$7 run
ATTENTION: Prefs file removed in background
/usr/share/tomcat5.5/.java/.userPrefs/org/vfny/geoserver/global/prefs.xml

GRAVE: Error listenerStart
31 oct. 2007 13:51:31 org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start
GRAVE: Erreur de démarrage du contexte [/geoserver] suite aux erreurs
précédentes
I try to install JAVA1.6 but the problem is the same.
Did i must to force go back to JAVA1.5.0.11 ?
Any ideas ?
I just try to install the Geoserver 1.5.4 on my gusty with tomcat and the
result is that i haven't the prefs.xml message, but the GRAVE: Error
listenerStart still remain.
Thank you for your help !

I don't have gutsy so I cannot tell, but usually the problems with
GeoServer on Ubuntu are that the default tomcat install has pretty
strict security settings and GeoServer cannot work with those.
The following blog explains how settings must be changed into
the Tomcat settings to have GeoServer working:
http://grimmeister.wordpress.com/2007/08/08/setting-up-an-open-geospatial-consortium-service-server/
Hope this helps

Thank you for your rapid answer
In fact it work with the ubuntu festy before the upgrade to ubuntu gusty
My tomcat policy was ever set to :
permission java.security.AllPermission;
for the geoserver
The more strange is that after installing the geoserver 1.5.4 i try to use
the embeded jetty to launch the version 1.5.4 and my old 1.5.3 and both work
with jetty.
So i think that my Java environment is good.
The problem must come from tomcat.
I continu my investigation
Thank you.

In fact i see that my catalina log is not complete !
I update my tomcat5,5 configuration to replace the catalina.out pipe to
catalina.txt file
and very interesting information appear :
Someone understand what's happen with java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0.13 ?
I don't
Maybe the more simple is to force the use of the java 1.5.0.11 i have on my
ubuntu festy release ?
What are you thinking about ?
Very thank you
Here the real catalina log !

Ouch, your install seems to be seriously broken. Have you upgraded
to a Gutsy for 64bit processors? There are a few references
about that error on the net:
http://www.google.it/search?q=can’t+load+ia+32-bit+.so+on+a+ia+32-bit+platform&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:it:official&client=firefox-a

Yes ouch is a good qualification lol
In fact the server is a laptop for a demonstration in two week.
the processor is a Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T7200
I think it is a 32 bit. :s
I do not realize the upgrade from festy to gusty myself, i let synaptic to
do it.
Regarding to the log, do you think my java version is a 64 bit installation
?
Or it is my tomcat version witch is broken ?
How can i check that ?
In any case thank you for you help.
I will see what my google friend said.

Problem is resolved !
In fact the tomcat5.5 installation on the gusty release seems to be buggy.
I uninstall tomcat 5.5 and i install the 5.5.25 release manually from
http://tomcat.apache.org/download-55.cgi
and all work !
Thank you for you help.
