Hi,
I want to display special symbols on a map.
These symbols will depend on the values of an underlying related feature, e.g. bars in different size to represent a feature value.
Due to the complexity of the graphical symbol I can't work with icons but would like to draw the symbols myself.
I thought of producing a special layer, that holds these symbols and can be queried via WMS. The code to do that would be something like a plugin or whatever.
Is this possible and if yes, what is the general way to proceed?
Are there any examples, tutorials or other kind of documentation?
Or is there any buzz word I should look for in the manuals that explain everything?
Thank for your help
Best regards

You can just store the icons as image files next to your SLD (Style Layered Descriptor) documents. You can use your own custom images with GeoServer and SLDs
Here is an introduction tutorial on SLDs: http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOSDOC/SLD+Intro+Tutorial
Here is the actual SLD specification that will describe how to use your own symbols: http://www.opengeospatial.org/docs/02-070.pdf
Hope that helps.
