[Geoserver-users] Styling the Admin page of a server

Hi List,
I have two different sets of GeoServer instances which are doing different things. The problem is they all have admin pages that look identical. The only difference is a single digit in the URL bar for which port they’re coming from. And a different digit difference for if they’re on a different server (live/test).
I haven’t yet managed to set something on the wrong server, but it’s only a matter of time.

Is there an easy way to restyle the GeoServer admin interface? I’m not looking for anything fancy; even just the ability to recolour the background would be useful (a very light shade of a colour would allow instant differentiation between servers - works wonderfully work remote desktops).
And/Or maybe the server name in big letters at the top?

How do other people handle this issue?

Regards,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
Hi Jonathan,

yes, pain in the butt this, noticing suddenly -- ooops I am fiddling around
with the production server not the test server as I thought.

web-core-2.3.3.jar

directory org/geoserver/web/img

a good candidate is: page-header-bg.png, which is now pink. Another would be
main-bg.png

I rather doubt the community would approve of this pink, but it helps me to
distinguish.

Cheers

Christian

Hi Christian,
Somehow I’d never realised the jars could be uncompressed. I can be a bit slow.

However, you’re right that does allow one potential solution. With a little tweaking there’s one that I think is even easier than yours (no image manipulation required), plus has a more noticeable effect. Basically editing the css colour for the header - I’ve opened a JIRA suggesting it as an improvement which details the file and line - http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-5964

Some examples:

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B22cYd3gwE-6WjlISXBmREFHb1U
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B22cYd3gwE-6ZWlHRmdTZ2VjOUk
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B22cYd3gwE-6d1hGaUFLOWFzS0E

The downside of course is that like yours, it has to be re-implemented every upgrade (which we’re doing monthly currently). Hence the suggestion.

Thanks!
Jonathan
