Is this capability available on 2.1.x? I can’t see it…

It is not, was not backported due to lack of funding to go through the process
of backporting such a large change
(amending the api chages, going though the community review, which is stricter
in case of backporting such large chnages).

It is however available and working on trunk, you can get a nightly build here:
http://gridlock.opengeo.org/geoserver/trunk/
