Yes, it does. It's reported in the capabilities document.

You use an SLD document to define user symbolization. Since GeoServer uses SLD's natively, it is quite easy for us to support remote user defined symbolization. The one thing we don't yet support is RemoteWFS. Which actually wouldn't be that hard at all for us to support, but no one's written the code to do it yet.
Note that the tag doesn't let you make customized symbols other than defined in SLD. But SLD is pretty extensive, has a number of well known symbols, and then also supports external graphics, so you can just create an image and use that as a symbol.
