[Geoserver-users] WCS porting on trunk done!

The porting is done, GeoServer 1.5.x is ready to go!

We are still finishing some stress tests, but all seems ok.

Some notes:

  • The project is based on GeoTools 2.3.x branch (actually 2.3.0-rc1-SNAPSHOT) [http://svn.geotools.org/geotools/branches/2.3.x]
  • In order to compile and run it correctly you need Java 1.5.x, JAI 1.1.4+ and ImageIO 1.1+
  • When start the Web Container (jatty, Tomcat, …) use the following JVM arguments to have better performances:
    -Xms256M -Xmx512M -Dorg.geotools.referencing.forceXY=true
  • The map producers have been replaced with others that use enhanced JAI and ImageIO functions. We are conducting tests on image sizes and setting better compression/quality parameters and at this moment we have smaller and coolest images than the previous release (we will post the test results soon).

Glad to hear the merge is done. Good work guys!

Couple of questions/comments:

Did we plan on having to use Java 1.5? Is it definitely required? I thought we were going to stick with 1.4 for a while, but I could be wrong.

Could you update the developers guide to reflect the JVM arguments that should be passed in? I think only the part on setting up Eclipse will need changing.

I'm glad to hear that everything went well and I know many people are looking forward to using WCS.

This is definitely the opposite of what I've heard. We planned to stay on 1.4 for a while.
What do we need 1.5 for?

In fact I just tried to build trunk with 1.4 and it builds fine. Don't know if it works thought, haven't tried
to really use it.

We will have to include some WCS examples in the sample requests page.

The porting is done, GeoServer 1.5.x is ready to go!

Now a question from a users point of view:
If I want to continue following, testing and using the geoserver wcs developments, what should I check out from subversion instead of 1.4.x-wcs-merge? 1.4.x? 1.5.x? Where will wcs development take place? Will trunk keep being based on geotools-2.3.0-snapshot, or switch to geotools-trunk (=2.4.0-snapshot)?

Sorry, but it's a bit hard to follow with all these branches being swooped in my face by the winds of change...

Hi Vincent,
you are right.

For all WCS users, follow the GeoServer trunk (GeoServer 1.5.x) and GeoTools 2.3.x branch (which actually is GeoTools 2.3.0-rc1-SNAPSHOT).

Nice!

A couple notes on things we need to get to 1.5.0...

- In order to compile and run it correctly you need Java 1.5.x, JAI 1.1.4+ and ImageIO 1.1+

These requirements are a bit much. At the very least we need a WFS and WMS that can run on Java 1.4. I'm fine if the WCS requires 1.5, but it would be really nice if it could do 1.4, so that we don't have to disable it by default (I suppose we could do an auto check and enable it if it's 1.5).

Same goes for JAI and ImageIO. We _can_not_ require these for everyone. We used to do this, and it was a nightmare, adoption shot up when these weren't required. I'm all for encouraging people to install them, but we need a default that works fine without them. Ideally include the jars, but if the installed version is there be able to use it. Less ideally have people remove the jars when they install the native ones.

We can also make it so the windows installer puts the windows native ones by default, which may help as well.

- When start the Web Container (jatty, Tomcat, ...) use the following JVM arguments to have better performances:
  -Xms256M -Xmx512M -Dorg.geotools.referencing.forceXY=true

Is it ok to set forceXY for all cases? Like should we set this in GeoServer by default? I'm pretty sure you can set system properties from within java on start up.

- The map producers have been replaced with others that use enhanced JAI and ImageIO functions. We are conducting tests on image sizes and setting better compression/quality parameters and at this moment we have smaller and coolest images than the previous release (we will post the test results soon).

That's great. Some users really like small image sizes, indeed we had bigger sizes for 1.3. So if we can get that as small as possible and still look very good that's great news.

best regards,

Chris

  • Java 1.5 is not a requirement, but things work much better using this.

  • We can even restore the old map producers which don’t require JAI/ImageIO, but GeoServer 1.5.x code like GeoTools 2.3.x are thought to highly improve performances and quality by using those two libraries. Maybe we can write a good installation guide for less expert users. We should speak about this at meeting I think.

  • With latest changes org.geotools.referencing.forceXY option should not be a requirement, but again it depends on Geotools and the Axis order issue, so I suggest to use this option for a while, not forever.

Will the new map producers work with the jar versions of jai/imageio? Or are they too slow with the jars? It could be good to keep both producers around, just rename the old ones so you use something else to request them. Installation guides are definitely essential, but we for sure need to have something that works out of the box, and then they can upgrade if they want more performance.

Hi all,

To my surprise I notice that some of my ows4 work has made its way to
trunk? In particular the community modules web2, and wfs2.

Alessio: Have you been syncing up 1.4.x_wcs_branch with trunk and 1.5.x?

-Justin

Chris Holmes wrote:

Alessio Fabiani wrote:

Ok, then let's document as such. Not required, but recommended for WCS.

- We can even restore the old map producers which don't require
JAI/ImageIO, but GeoServer 1.5.x code like GeoTools 2.3.x are thought
to highly improve performances and quality by using those two
libraries. Maybe we can write a good installation guide for less
expert users. We should speak about this at meeting I think.

Will the new map producers work with the jar versions of jai/imageio? Or
are they too slow with the jars? It could be good to keep both
producers around, just rename the old ones so you use something else to
request them. Installation guides are definitely essential, but we for
sure need to have something that works out of the box, and then they can
upgrade if they want more performance.

- With latest changes org.geotools.referencing.forceXY option should
not be a requirement, but again it depends on Geotools and the Axis
order issue, so I suggest to use this option for a while, not forever.

Cool.

The map producers don’t require native acceleration, so the JAI/ImageIO jars are enough to let them work perfectly.

Moreover in the UI there are some options that let the user explicity saying to the producers if use or not native acceleration and soon several quality/compression params for some image formats too.

Nice!

A couple notes on things we need to get to 1.5.0…

    1.1.4+ and ImageIO 1.1+

We used to do this, and it was a nightmare, adoption shot up when
these weren’t required. I’m all for encouraging people to

Ok, I am probably going to remove some stuff then, like the community
modules sine they wont compile on trunk. Most of the other stuff hasn't
changed though so no big deal.

We should perhaps delete all the old WCS branches at this point? So that they don't confuse users? (of course they will remain within svn, just not visible at current revisions).

Also did we get the check out docs updated? On the main WCS page? To point at trunk?

One last thing, let's try to keep questions to one of the two mail lists. If it's a question about development (at this point that'd probably be anything but the simplest WCS questions, since it's not yet at beta1), about actually changing code and whatnot, it should go to devel. Most threads started by committers should go to devel, unless it's specifically to get feedback from users. If it's a user question then send it to the list. It's good to update users on big things, like when a merge is completed, but they don't need the moment to moment updates.

Hi Vincent,
you are right.

For all WCS users, follow the GeoServer trunk (GeoServer 1.5.x) and GeoTools 2.3.x branch (which actually is GeoTools 2.3.0-rc1-SNAPSHOT).

On 10/20/06, *Vincent Schut* <schut@anonymised.com <mailto:schut@anonymised.com>> wrote:

Now a question from a users point of view:
If I want to continue following, testing and using the geoserver wcs
developments, what should I check out from subversion instead of
1.4.x-wcs-merge? 1.4.x? 1.5.x? Where will wcs development take place?
Will trunk keep being based on geotools-2.3.0-snapshot, or switch to
    geotools-trunk (=2.4.0-snapshot)?

Sorry, but it's a bit hard to follow with all these branches being
swooped in my face by the winds of change...
