I think you mean the Websphere Community Edition which has nothing to do with the Websphere commerical products.
Asfaik the community edition uses tomcat as a Servlet Engine. You can try to install tomcat and deploy geoserver and look if you get this error again. If you get it, search for resolving the problem with tomcat, there are many more tomcat users out there.

1)
According to
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/community/features/?S_CMP= wspace
Tomcat V6.0.18 is used. Did you try with this version ?
2)
I assume, Websphere is working with an IBM java runtime. Have you ever tried to use the IBM java with your working tomcat deployment. Personally, I have some troubles using the ibm jdk, especially the java 6 version.

To be sure:
can you start your tomcat and execute a
ps -ef | grep java
afterwards stop tomcat and start websphere and again
ps -ef | grep java
You should see the full java path. What is it ?

Hi all,
I have installed Websphere 2.1.1.2 on my Ubuntu Linux machine. Also i
downloaded geoserver-1.7.5-war .
I deployed this geoserver war in websphere. It is succesfully
deployed.
But
when i am trying to start geoserver service.
It is giving me "Lifecycle operation failed".
Also i am pasting server log details.
Help on this will be appreciated.
