[Geoserver-users] White lines in GWC 900913, latest nightly build

Good Morning.

I’ve run into a problem using GeoServer gwc in 900913 with imagery. Here is the setup:

  • Latest nightly build GeoServer (note, it also occurs in 1.7.3)
  • Imagery stored as GeoTiff in 4326.
  • Using Mosaic imaging

All works perfectly using gwc 4326, but when viewing in 900913, get white lines at gwc tile borders.

For a quick view, go here and zoom in once:
http://ogi.state.ok.us:8080/geoserver/gwc/demo/ogi:Test_1?srs=EPSG:900913

To reproduce on your own machine:

  • Download these sample files:
  • Unzip
  • Create a mosaic coverage - set OutputTransparentColor: 0 to make it show up better (white instead of black line)
  • Go to the gwc demo page in GeoServer
  • Click on the EPSG:900913 link
  • Zoom in once (or more)
  • Zoom in some more (3x), and the white lines get even worse, in both horizontal as well as vertical.
Note that it is not at the borders of the sample images as these are square, and the join is in the center. Instead, the white line is at the join of the gwc tile.

Thanks for looking into this!
Roger

Ciao Roger,
are you able to isolate a single request from GWC to GeoServer so that we can:

1> check if this is geoserver's fault
2> if 1 applies, fix the problem.

Simone,

I believe you can reproduce it easily using the steps and data I gave you
already, on your own server. Should only take you a couple of minutes.

It is a critical problem for us, so many thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi,

i remember i had the same issue using biliniear or cubic
interpolation method. using nearest neighbour "solved" the problem...
maybe this helps you, cheers

Ivan,
Thanks a million, that does seem to "fix" it. However our client really wants interpolation, to avoid pixelation when zoomed in, as well as generally better results at all zoom levels.

However, this fix gives us a little breathing room, as the white lines were much worse than pixelation.

Simone, this should give you a little more information on where this is occurring.

K, well for the records this is a problem I was already trying to fix
in a non intrusive way, I did not expect it to pop up this way.
The lines appear because you are mixing bilinear interpolation with
reprojection, it is a border effect that comes from the fact that the
raster data gets extended with a value of 0.
I'll open up a jira for this but I have to say that it is not going to
be easy to fix.

Simone.

Thanks a million, that does seem to "fix" it. However our client really
wants interpolation, to avoid pixelation when zoomed in, as well as
generally better results at all zoom levels.

However, this fix gives us a little breathing room, as the white lines
were
much worse than pixelation.

Simone, this should give you a little more information on where this is
occurring.

Hi,

i remember i had the same issue using biliniear or cubic
interpolation method. using nearest neighbour "solved" the problem...
maybe this helps you, cheers

Ciao Roger,
are you able to isolate a single request from GWC to GeoServer so that
we
can:

1> check if this is geoserver's fault
2> if 1 applies, fix the problem.

Good Morning.

I've run into a problem using GeoServer gwc in 900913 with imagery.
Here
is
the setup:

- Latest nightly build GeoServer (note, it also occurs in 1.7.3)
- Imagery stored as GeoTiff in 4326.
- Using Mosaic imaging

All works perfectly using gwc 4326, but when viewing in 900913, get
white
lines at gwc tile borders.

For a quick view, go here and zoom in once:
http://ogi.state.ok.us:8080/geoserver/gwc/demo/ogi:Test_1?srs=EPSG:900913

To reproduce on your own machine:

Download these sample files:
http://ogi.state.ok.us/ogi/Downloads/gwctest.zip
Unzip
Create a mosaic coverage - set OutputTransparentColor: 0 to make it
show
up
better (white instead of black line)
Go to the gwc demo page in GeoServer
Click on the EPSG:900913 link
Zoom in once (or more)
Zoom in some more (3x), and the white lines get even worse, in both
horizontal as well as vertical.

Note that it is not at the borders of the sample images as these are
square,
and the join is in the center. Instead, the white line is at the join
of
the
gwc tile.

Thanks for looking into this!

In the latest GWC a "gutter" function was introduced, a buffer around each image that gets sliced away.

That would probably fix this, as long as you don't have labels that get cut off.

Arne and Simone,

I'm just following up on this. Is this gutter thing available in the 1.7.6 release of GWC, and if so, how do you use it? I'd like to see if it solves this issue.

Yes, should be.

You'll have to define a custom layer, I recommend using a new name to make debugging easier. Get the default configuration file (see [1]), put it into <GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR>/gwc/

Modify one of those layers to suit your needs, then add

<gutter>{pixel width}</gutter>

(see the bottom of [2] for the exact order of the elements) and restart GeoServer to pick it up.
