GeoSpatial Solutions

I have been discussing submitting a series of articles about Open Source GIS with the Editor in Chief of GeoSpatial Solutions (This is both a hard copy and electronic trade magazine for GIS). I am also thinking about seeing if we can do a monthly column in the software section on changes and updates to FOSS software.

What are your thoughts on this idea.

I fully support this idea. Are you thinking that you could do the regular/monthly writing too? I had started to do this once, but ran out of free time.

Do you want to do it on behalf of OSGeo in particular? I suspect other magazines would also be interested in regular content or a special series. Great idea. Is the series you mention going to happen?

How about considering a OSGeo syndicated column
that can be published in several magazines
simultaneously. Maybe the folks at GIS@development
could also be interested. We could also make
translations with the help of local chapters
(if the article is 2 pages or so).

Venka,

I suspect some of these magazines will not be keen on publishing
the same articles as their competitors. If they don't mind that
would be great, but in their position this would make me queasy.

What I would like to see us do is actively solicit articles from the
community for several of these magazines, and also try to preserve
the right for us to publish the materials in other venues (like on
our own website for instance). Hopefully they would be ok with that.

Best regards,

Maybe you can ask the GIS@development guys if they will agree
for publishing your Jan 2007 article elsewhere with acknowledgement
to the source ("originally published in ???). I have a feeling they
will agree.

Perhaps we could also select article from the GRASS/OSGeo Newsletter for
publishing else where too, if the authors agree again with
acknowledgement to the source.

Kind regards

I am hopeful that once our newsletter efforts get rolling we will have several types of articles that would be reusable in other venues. There do appear to be many opportunities for putting articles out to other websites and magazines, so any authors would likely have their choice of where to have it.

Venka-

I think it is unlikely that the “second” magazine would accept such an idea, even if the “first” (GeoConnexions in this case) was enlightened enough to agree to it…

In any case, a “column” is really very short. I’m very keen on the idea of having us do a monthly column on various topics, and separately doing real “articles” (of arbitrary length) for any publication willing to take it. One approach would be to have someone write a column, and then expand on the content for a “real” article.

But, the idea of having the columns (or articles) translated for our own website is a good one.

Maybe true. I can moot this idea to the folks at GIS Development and some academic
journals in Asia and see if they will agree for reprinting the one page column.
