Hello GRASS community,
good news:
The GRASS GIS community on Zenodo has experienced an significant growth of content since December 2024, which still continues (we need your help on this, see below).
This is the Zenodo community page: https://zenodo.org/communities/grass/
Zenodo (https://zenodo.org/) is a long term open acess repository (being open source, non-commercial and friendly) for scientific content, which is already used by over 25 OSGeo projects and initiatives for digital long term preservation of their code releases and to obtain DOI for FAIR due credit by scientific citation.
Apart from software, data sets, publications and other kinds of scientific results are being collected and long term preserved on Zenodo.
The GRASS GIS community page on Zenodo is currently maintained by Pietro Zambelli (who started it - thanks!), Markus Neteler and myself.
The GRASS GIS community gives us an overview of “all things GRASS GIS” on Zenodo which have been long term preserved (and can be cited by a DOI).
Adding more Zenodo content related to GRASS GIS is a bottom up effort and we need your help on this: All first authors of GRASS GIS related Zenodo content are invited to update the metadata on the Zenodo (landing) pages: Go to the Zenodo (landing) page for your content/DOI, scroll down and edit “Communities”, search for “GRASS GIS” and select & submit. After a quick review process your content will be added to the community page.
OSGeo has alread set up an umbrella community page for all things OSGeo (including GRASS GIS), which also grows quickly: https://zenodo.org/communities/osgeo/records
I am optimistic that the GRASS GIS community page will soon be connected to the OSGeo community page.
Please be aware that Zenodo content can be part of several communities. Declaring your content as being part of the GRASS GIS community doesn’t prevent you to make the same content part of a number of other Zenodo communities, such as topical communities or conference communities.
Kind regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,
There is already a GRASS GIS community on Zenodo:
https://zenodo.org/communities/grass/
Pietro Zambelli is the current maintainer. Can you take a lead on this and ask Pietro to share or transfer the management to you and another active project representative?
Thank you,
Vashek

Hello GRASS GIS PSC,
I would like to propose that the GRASS GISp roject registers itself as a “community” in Zenodo.
Zenodo (https://zenodo.org/) is a long term open acess repository (being open source, non-commercial and friendly), which is already used by GRASS GIS and many other OSGeo projects for digital long term preservation of their code releases and to obtain DOI for FAIR due credit by scientific citation.
The innovative GMT project community has already registered as a Zenodo community. This allows them to have an overview of all things “GMT” preserved in Zenodo:
https://zenodo.org/communities/generic-mapping-tools/recordsOnce a GRASS GIS community group has been registered in Zenodo, we will be able to gain an overview of all GRASS GIS-related deposits in Zenodo, including software releases, but also data sets (e.g. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13370131), presentations, publications, etc. which are not available via GitHub.
Details about the Zenodo community set-up process here: https://help.zenodo.org/docs/communities/
Should the PSC decide to register an Zenodo community group for GRASS GIS, we can appoint volunteers taking on different roles in the curation process in a next step (Reader, Curator, Manager, Owner).
Zenodo showcases community groups visibly on their website as “featured communities”. This can provide heightened visibility for the GRASS GIS community.
Best,
Peter
