[GRASS-user] GRASS promotion team

Hello all,

Markus proposed to form a GRASS promotion team to promote GRASS GIS. I
agree with him that we need more "GRASS GIS awareness" in all kind of
institutions. My own experience shows that most people working with
GIS doesn't even know GRASS or think it's some of these unstable
Freeware for nerds without knowing the potential of it. So I think we
should start some sort of "Branding" .

So I think we should do some PR work and I would like to start. It
would be great if there are some other people out there could join me.

The first thing I like to do is to create a brochure where all
capabilities of GRASS are described which we can spread among
potential GRASS users . The German GRASS user group had made one some
time ago and I will see if we can use any of their ideas or templates
or whatever.

There will be more work, like getting in contact with all people which
might be interested in GRASS like govermental authorities, send Press
releases from GRASS to interested magazins, websites, etc... Build up
of a contact database....

I just see this mail as a kickoff because I think PR should not be
unterestimenated.

Malte
PS: Uuups, sorry. I just saw that a draft version of this email is in
my send folder. Sorry, was late when I wrote it yesterday evening and
I certainly pressed the wrong button....

Malte,

I would like to help you. I work for the U.S. National Weather Service and I have been promoting the use of GRASS GIS for several years now - with some success. One thing I have noticed is that results speak volumes, especially when a skeptical party *finally* gives GRASS GIS a hands-on try. I agree that a brochure listing GRASS GIS features is needed; it might also help to have something of a side-by-side comparison with ARC GIS??

Tom

Hi,

it would be great, if the promoting materials (brochures, posters, ...)
would use template system, so that it could be easy translated to
several language.

With e.g. LaTeX this could be possible...

If there are any GRASS users in Sydney Australia this week, there is an
opportunity to demo GRASS at the Linux Australia conference
(http://linux.conf.au) open day on Thursday. There is a group of us
setting up an Australian Chapter of OSGEO
(http://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php/Australia). We will be demonstrating
various open source GIS packages as part of an OSGEO promotion. We
would be happy to include anyone who wishes to promote GRASS under the
OSGEO banner.

Hi
Great, Grat idea... but I suggest two steps, before brochures and posters:
- good and easy to install live CD: see - try - install. Ubuntu seems to be good platform to create such....- I try to promote FOSS GIS software among my students (GIS Day, occasional and regular lecuters) sudents reports me that existing LiveCD are inactual and hard to install (for them) they looks for something easiear, like ubuntu
- and the second: the system of help and tutorials of grass is still based on text mode. It is excelent for grass experienced users, but is really frustrating for (potential) new users. How to convieced new user that grass is really user frendly with few lines of comands with lot of parameters? A good, completly GUI based beginner tutorial, it is what is needed first...

I agree that a good tutorial is needed first. I also think that a beginners wiki would be helpful. A lot of my questions are not answered and so if there is a novice mailing list this might be more helpful for the naive questions a beginner might ask.

I agree with Jarek.

Ubuntu has a really easy to use (and install) liveCD.

As for the GUI based tutorial, I am working on something like that,
but it's in Portuguese for now. I will translated it to English and
try to work on both versions at the same time. As soon as I have
something ready, I will post a download link here.

Great ideas floating around today!

I would also like to help out with these efforts, and think something
like LATEX would be a good framework to use.

For the last couple of years I have been promoting
GRASS/GDAL/PostGIS/R in my local department. Having more than just
screenshots and simple examples would be a good thing.

Cheers,

We have an eclectic body of users of GRASS to draw from. Ideally,
(albeit, ambitious) I would like to see the wiki developed with
information about how to use GRASS for specific applications. One for
weather, geology, remote sensing, etc. We could then make a template
poster that could be altered to highlight GRASS for each application.
"Distribute" the posters with links referencing the wiki for more
detailed info, liveCD, etc.

Too ambitious?

I would also like to help out with these efforts, and think something
like LATEX would be a good framework to use.

For the last couple of years I have been promoting
GRASS/GDAL/PostGIS/R in my local department. Having more than just
screenshots and simple examples would be a good thing.

Yes, a poster template would be very helpful. Let me know if I may offer some assistance.

Additonally, I would like to see a technical data-sheet for high-end users. It is difficult argue without knowing the systems limits. Just having a shiny image flyer or a nice poster won't do this job...

Hi,

2007/1/14, JJ <jarekj@amu.edu.pl>:

Hi
Great, Grat idea... but I suggest two steps, before brochures and posters:
- good and easy to install live CD: see - try - install. Ubuntu seems to
be good platform to create such....- I try to promote FOSS GIS software
among my students (GIS Day, occasional and regular lecuters) sudents
reports me that existing LiveCD are inactual and hard to install (for
them) they looks for something easiear, like ubuntu
- and the second: the system of help and tutorials of grass is still
based on text mode. It is excelent for grass experienced users, but is
really frustrating for (potential) new users.

it is really hard work to keep the CD up-to-date. I do not know, if
there will be enough time for this.

How to convieced new user
that grass is really user frendly with few lines of comands with lot of
parameters? A good, completly GUI based beginner tutorial, it is what is
needed first...

it would be great, if somebody would start to work on GRASS Kursskript
from GDF-Hannover e.g. in the Wiki. IMHO this book is great, it is not
just up-to-date.

I thing rather stable version than actual cvs:

with ubuntu it is not too difficult:
see:
http://code.google.com/p/reconstructor/

I agree a CD is needed... Although this has been talked about for a long time...

A brochure would take less time.. And frankly the more time we sit around the more people go uninformed about Grass.

With e.g. LaTeX this could be possible...

Hello all,

Markus proposed to form a GRASS promotion team to promote GRASS GIS.
I agree with him that we need more "GRASS GIS awareness" in all kind
of institutions. My own experience shows that most people working
with GIS doesn't even know GRASS or think it's some of these
unstable Freeware for nerds without knowing the potential of it. So
I think we should start some sort of "Branding" .

So I think we should do some PR work and I would like to start. It
would be great if there are some other people out there could join me.

The first thing I like to do is to create a brochure where all
capabilities of GRASS are described which we can spread among
potential GRASS users . The German GRASS user group had made one
some time ago and I will see if we can use any of their ideas or
templates or whatever.

There will be more work, like getting in contact with all people
which might be interested in GRASS like govermental authorities,
send Press releases from GRASS to interested magazins, websites,
etc... Build up of a contact database....

I just see this mail as a kickoff because I think PR should not be
unterestimenated.

What About getting the GRASS Project Steering Committee involved?

This way we could double up with the OSGEO education movement.

Cheers

Hi,

Hi
Great, Grat idea... but I suggest two steps, before brochures and
posters:
- good and easy to install live CD: see - try - install. Ubuntu seems
to be good platform to create such....- I try to promote FOSS GIS
software among my students (GIS Day, occasional and regular lecuters)
sudents reports me that existing LiveCD are inactual and hard to
install (for
them) they looks for something easiear, like ubuntu
- and the second: the system of help and tutorials of grass is still
based on text mode. It is excelent for grass experienced users, but
is really frustrating for (potential) new users.

it is really hard work to keep the CD up-to-date. I do not know, if
there will be enough time for this.

I thing rather stable version than actual cvs:

with ubuntu it is not too difficult:

Hi,
of course, I think we should coordinate our work with OSGeo. In fact,
I want to get in touch with the OSGeo Viscom team.

As I mentioned in my first mail I regard it as a kickoff to see who
wants to participate and what should be done.

And I'm quite glad about all the responses!

cheers
Malte

I'd very much like to participate in this project.

I have a bit of background in marketing (not my fault)
and think I have some useful skills to bring to the
table.

That said;
Some points to consider,

Advocacy.

This is always dodgy stuff. Most advocacy is done in
opposition. Comparing a thing against another thing.
Going down this road is something that deserves some
careful consideration.

A list was given, and seeming agreed upon. That was;

(from Malte Halbey-Martin)

1. Build of an easytouse Live-CD (Ubuntu?)
2. Make a brochure
3. Newbie friendly tutorial
4. Technical data sheet for the high end user

Things that we should do later or synchronous
1. Maybe some Newbie forum (wiki or newbie maling list?)
2. build up of a contact database
3. try to send press release e. g. to papers, journals which might be
interested

I would suggest going about this exactly backwards, in
the following order

1. Compile the technical data sheet for the high-end user.
and building from that;
2. Get the newbie friendly tutorial together. Folks involved
in the general GIS education process would be invaluable in
this. They know what people are exposed to early on in GIS
education, and can help tailor this tutorial to the early
user in such a way that it makes sense.
This should also 'go live' as the wiki matures to the
point of at least having a good glossary. All the tutorial
information should be in the wiki
3. Make a brochure.
This is sales, and nothing but sales. It's effective and
difficult to do well. But it must be done if one is really
interested in expanding the impact of a 'thing'. This thing
being the whole Grass concept.
Folks with marketing experience need to sound off here.
Fortunately anyone who can run a solid Grass system can avail
themselves of Scribus trivially. Be fun to collect ideas and concepts
and have a friendly competition of Scribus brochure designs.
4. The 'Live-CD'.
This is a sticky bit of business.
grabbing a Ubuntu or Kbuntu build, shoving Grass in there, and reburning
the ISO might seem trivial enough, but maintaining a Live-CD
distribution is kinda painful.
On top of that, there is the sticky-wicket problem of finding
a live-cd distro that gpl-ish enough to make folks happy all
around. That's tricky stuff. Ubuntu, much as everyone loves it,
has done some remarkable dancing around propriety add-ins (video
drivers mostly) trying to make a working product that is also
painless. Tricky.
The Fedora Project now has a live-cd kit, and there is the
gNewSense distribution as well. There are others. But this
again, requires some careful thought and consideration.

On press releases
OSGEO is trying to wake the world up to the existence of things other
than those-other-GIS-folks. Anyone who has spent time in the
new world of the Cluetrain knows at heart the best way to handle
this kind of thing. It is genuine hard work to promote a concept.
In short, there isn't an event so small that it doesn't deserve
a news release. Someone brings up a mirror, that's big news. Grass
changes version in stable, that's big news. new subjects added
to the wiki, that's big news.

Okay, that's enough from me for now.

0. Set up a wiki page to collect images and text:
http://grass.gdf-hannover.de/wiki/GRASS_Community#Promoting_GRASS_GIS

Maybe Markus's SVN server could hold LaTeX sources?

1. Compile the technical data sheet for the high-end user.
and building from that;

Start from 6.0, 6.2.0, and 6.2.1 press releases?

2. Get the newbie friendly tutorial together.

some work already started,
http://grass.gdf-hannover.de/wiki/GRASS_Help#First_Day_Documentation

It would be Very nice if someone updated "Visual Tutorial for GRASS 6"
by Lorenzo Moretti for GRASS 6.2 + gis.m.
http://wwwamb.bologna.enea.it/forgrass/documents/Grass-6-Visual-Tutorial.pdf

3. Make a brochure.

--Call for screenshots--; the wiki can take images, but not other binaries.

4. The 'Live-CD'.

There are already several made:
http://grass.ibiblio.org/download/cdrom.php

The vast majority of LiveCDs are Debian derived, so a critical step is
getting a good GRASS 6.2.1 pacakge into Debian. For now things are
frozen for the upcoming release; a 6.2.0 package awaits in the
experimental repository, a 6.2.1 package meta-exists in the DebianGIS
SVN and awaits upload.

On press releases

http://www.slashgeo.org is a nice receptive place to start.

The GRASS Newsletter is a great forum for user relations too.

Yes, no problem.
