Hi Albert,

It's very hard to help you with such a general question. If you are trying to
start the GUI, why don't you try entering g.gui wxpython? Then you can manage
what you're trying to do with graphical menus.

What you're seeing is the normal GRASS GIS start menu, it's where you start
everything from, so in principle you've started the program. You just need to
do whatever your plan is. Sorry to give you a negative answer, but without
specifics there's no way to help.

Best,
Daniel

Hi Albert,

Don't get me wrong, but a short on the main GRASS page showed me that:
6.4.2 is the stable version,
6.5 seems to be a development version and
7.x is called the "active development, partial rewrite" version which
might work - or might not work ..

From where do you have the information that GRASS 7 is already stable?

I am sure that expert grass users might help you here in that case but
yor Subject "urgent" makes me think that you are working on important
data with an unstable version of grass?

good luck (as I am not able to help you with your problem)
kind regards
Werner

Simply specify the location and mapset with absolute path at the
command line in "text" mode:

grass70 -text /home/soeren/grassdata/LL/PERMANENT

grass70 --help

Usage:
  grass70 [-h | -help | --help] [-v | --version] [-c | -c geofile | -c
EPSG:code]
          [-text | -gui] [--config param]
          [[[<GISDBASE>/]<LOCATION_NAME>/]<MAPSET>]

Flags:
-h or -help or --help print this help message
-v or --version show version information and exit
-c create given database, location or
mapset if it doesn't exist
  -text use text based interface
                                   and set as default
-gui use wxpython graphical user interface
                                   and set as default
  --config print GRASS configuration parameters
                                   options: arch,build,compiler,path,revision

Parameters:
GISDBASE initial database (path to GIS data)
  LOCATION_NAME initial location
  MAPSET initial mapset

GISDBASE/LOCATION_NAME/MAPSET fully qualified initial mapset directory

Environment variables relevant for startup:
  GRASS_GUI select GUI (text, gui)
GRASS_WISH set wish shell name to override 'wish'
GRASS_HTML_BROWSER set html web browser for help pages
GRASS_ADDON_PATH set additional path(s) to local GRASS
modules or user scripts
GRASS_ADDON_BASE set additional GISBASE for locally
installed GRASS Addons
GRASS_BATCH_JOB shell script to be processed as batch job
GRASS_PYTHON set python shell name to override 'python'

Hi Albert!

Would be interesting where this information comes from.
Because a "stable GRASS 7" seems to be definitely not correct information.
Knowing where this information comes from would prevent other users to
fall into the same "trap"..

Anyway - I've seen there are already suggestion to solve your problem
.. good luck again with it

kind regards
Werner

Cluster, cool

Okay, the first step is to identify what you want to do and then fins the command that let’s you do it. My suggestion would be to install grass on a normal work station and then try working with it with the GUI. Each command that you perform with the mouse is also a protocoled text command, which you can see and use to plan your own text commands.

Of course it is possible to change locations without a GUI. When you start GRASS, it asks you what location you want to be in. Just enter the location and mapset that you want to use and you’ll be using it. Just exit out of GRASS with Ctrl+D and start GRASS again.

If you want to do this in a running GRASS session, you
can change some variables, recreate the GISRCRC file and
reload it.

See:

--> #regenerate GISRCRC for TARGETMAPSET and load it
