[GRASS5] grass.itc.it server migration to new machine

Dear GRASS community,

this week we want to migrate 'grass.itc.it' to a new
machine. It is likely that the server is down for
1 hour (maybe less, maybe more). The basic problem
is the migration of all mailing lists which requires
to stop the email server for the time of migration.

ITC-irst continues to support the GRASS project.
The good old server is up for 448 days now; we hope
that the new server behaves as well as the old one.

Additional change: Once the new machine is up (same
name, same IP), I want to migrate the GRASS User list
(kindly hosted at Baylor University) to our server to
get control over it. Currently we cannot help with
subsciption issues etc. The plan is to fully enable
the already existing GRASS User list which runs in
background for some years now (to maintain the list
archive - at Baylor no archive are provided). I'll
transfer all subscribers to the IRST based user list,
you will then receive an announcement with password.
Mails to the old Baylor address should still arrive
as our list here is subscribed as user there. Nothing
should get lost.

We try to miminize the outage time and we will announce
once the new server is up & running.

Best regards

Markus

Hi 'grass5' community,

I forgot to mention that this is the chance to rename
the mailing list to grass-dev.

I think that I'll rename it and add an alias 'grass5'
which points to grass-dev@grass.itc.it . The current
name isn't really appropriate any more.
Also the subject prefix I would update then.

Any objections?

Markus

No objections, only cheers from here! The prefix could be
[GRASS development] or [GRASS developers] if those are too long I would recommend [GRASS dev].

Markus,

I thought we agreed to this months back. In any case, grass-dev makes much
more sense than grass5.

Hi again,

the new server is up and running now.
Please use

grass-dev AT grass.itc.it

for future postings. The archives are at:
http://grass.itc.it/pipermail/grass-dev/

For backward compatibility I have added an
alias for the old grass5@grass.itc.it address.
I have also a link for 'grass5' archives so that
the existing few zillion references should still work.
All users with their settings should be migrated.

Special kudos to our admin Roberto Flor to work
around a nice Mailman migration bug!

Please report remaining problems.

Cheers

Markus

PS: The earthquake map is significantly faster now
The Mapserver-GRASS demo application I'll install
    next week.
