I do have access to a pc. What os does GRASS work best on? Could I install some flavor Linux or Free BSD and get GRASS running with GDAL support?
Anyway, I wish you luck on getting 5.7 to work on a mac that would be very nice. I think 5.7's vector features are what I'll want to play with most in the long run. Thanks,
Eric

Many developers have GNU/Linux machines,
but any reasonable X11 capable, nearly posix compatible operating system
will do.

Yes, GNU/Linux and FreeBSD should be fine.

Thanks for your interest in GRASS!

Linux/x86 is by far the best-supported platform, as that's what most
of the developers use.
Regarding specific Linux distributions/versions, it's probably best to
avoid the bleeding edge; a slightly older version is more likely to
have had any version-specific quirks discovered and fixed.
OTOH, if you're planning on using pre-compiled binaries, they are
likely to work best on the exact distribution version on which they
were built.
A large proportion of issues regarding building Unix software on
"not-quite-Unix" systems such as MacOS X and Cygwin come down to
figuring out how to make your system appear more like a "vanilla" Unix
system. This may involve tweaking the configuration, or installing a
few more packages, or building a certain library from the original
source code instead of using the vendor's "improved" version.
