[GRASSLIST:456] Re: GRASS WIKI thoughts and comments

Well, I didn't really get an answer. I did find the GDF Hannover tutorials here:

http://www.gdf-hannover.de/media.php?id=0&lg=en

Which are very good (thought the English translation could use some
polish). I thought that it might be good to work with these documents.
But there is a translation team in charge of this stuff and I haven't
joined that team, nor do I know if they would welcome posting this
information on the web in a wiki or html document.

Also, there was no answer on the problem of CVS access behind DHCP
connections. So it is impossible right now to work on the HTML
documentation (I cannot do this at work of course).

Hi David,

I was wondering if you heard anything more on this from the developers. My
reason for asking is that I'd like to volunteer to help you to upgrade Grass
documentation, if you would like the help. I had emailed Markus about this a
long time ago and I didn't really receive much direction on what would be
the best way to go about it, so the issue kind of died.

Now that there is someone else who seems eager to tackle this problem, I
think some real progress can be made if there is a coordinated effort.

Let me know what you think, and how I can help.

Regards,

~ Eric

I tried registering myself on the wiki again because I didn't see my
name on the User list. It said I was already registered, and in fact,
allowed me to edit pages. Is the list of WikiUsers functioning
properly, or maybe I am misunderstanding what that list represents
(for internal use only?). Also, the little question mark next to my
name is an indication that my (public) personal profile has not been
created. I clicked on it and found I do not have permission to create
a personal profile. Is this normal?

I was going to start hacking away at the tutorial tonight on the Wiki.
While I was working on the tutorial, I found I wasn't able to edit the
sandbox (of all places)!

Then, I uploaded an image to one of the direction pages on file
attachments which I should probably not be allowed to do but it worked
just fine. However, when I tried to clean up the mess I made of the
page I didn't have permission to move attachments to the trash, so I
left a message for the webmaster to clean it up. At least the natural
order of the universe was restored.

I found the GrassSixTutorial node to be confusing:

http://grass.gdf-hannover.de/twiki/bin/view/GRASS/GrassSixTutorial

Is this meant to be a list of links to other tutorials (in which case
it is circular since some of the outbound links turn around and link
back to this page). Or is the idea for a real tutorial to grow and
mature there? In which case, I would like to start building it up.

I also started working my way through the CVS html manual pages with
the intention of correcting errors and maybe adding some images if
they would be helpful. But I am behind a DHCP connection and to
request write access to CVS you request a permanent IP address or
range (not available from Comcast cable, but I am keeping track of
addresses I have received).

How can this editing process be made more accessible?

Also, there was no answer on the problem of CVS access behind DHCP
connections.

just to clarify, the problem isn't DHCP, the problem is the dynamic IP
address. My univeristy computer uses DHCP to fetch its static IP
address e.g.

So it is impossible right now to work on the HTML documentation (I
cannot do this at work of course).

You could prepare the files, create patches* and post them to the bug
tracker, somewhere new in the wiki (as an attachment), to grass5, or to
some volunteer who can commit them. Inefficient and a pain, but not
impossible.

[*] with "cvs diff description.html > r.proj_man.diff"
then apply in module dir with "patch -p0 < r.proj_man.diff"

Hi,

we would of course welcome, if you like to join and help. If you have any
questions about contributing, we can try to help to find the right place and
document for your contributions. Sorry, if we missed something...

I can recommend following for the beginning :-):

- html wiki documentation GRASS 6 needs help
http://grass.gdf-hannover.de/twiki/bin/view/GRASS/GrassSixTutorial

- tutorial translation or adding/updating
http://www.gdf-hannover.de/translation

- the Grass Documentation Project in general would be happy, too
http://grass.itc.it/gdp/index.php

Otto
