[GRASSLIST:5598] EPSG codes at startup

Paolo,

Because I don't use EPSG, I hadn't looked at the EPSG startup and so replied
in ignorance. It turns out that there IS a list of EPSG codes that you can
browse and select from...and it is VERY long. Still, it is very much what
you were wishing for. You also have the option of making a new EPSG location
that is not on the list it seems. I am copying the list to make sure that
others know about this alternate (and possibly easier) way of setting up a
location.

Also, I want to note that the startup help--called by the appropriately
named "help" button when GRASS starts up  --is a pretty nice piece of
information for new users. Furthermore, Markus set it up in what appears to
be an extensible help system. So if anyone wants to build on this to make
additional startup help topics, it should be doable.

Michael

It IS useful to start. I verified this with students. Yes, the problem is with
the length of the list. Of course a hyerarchical structure would be better,
but that's going to be more complicated.

However, there IS now a button (it says HELP) at the very first screen that
takes you to a page that describes the basics of how to set up a location,
get your data into GRASS, etc.

You are right. I missed it. Sorry.

For discussions of the UI, it would be helpful if all were talking about
the same UI. I see that Russell was looking at 5.7.0. This is about 9
months old and has a rather different UI than 6.0.0 beta 1. This is a
consequence of this being the development release and pretty rapid
development. Not that the 6.0.0 UI couldn't be improved, but it is
different from 5.7.0. And both are different from the interface in
5.4--though all are in TclTk.

I agree, and I would suggest all to move to 6.0 the latest. It is worth the
while.

All the best.

Hi Michael.
I know of the EPSG list; it has been a relevant improvement. Its usage,
however, can be improved. Currently, one has to look up the codes, choose the
right one, remember it, and write it back to the appropriate field (on the
previous window). This looks rather primitive, and I suspect (no TclTk
knowlwdge, so I may be wrong) it should be easy to have a more standard
behaviour (choose an item from a list, and the chosen value goes into the
form).
The main problem I see is that the list is very long, and probably difficult
to browse. So the new system used by qgis (as suggested by Markus) looks
promising.
As for the help, please forgive me (I didn't notice it). I'll test it with
students in the next weeks and I'll suggest improvements if necessary.
All the best.
