is there any way to invert the colortable in ps.map so the highest value will be
on top?

It's already that way in 5.1(5.7). If you prefer to recompile the
source for 5.0.x to work like that, send me an email & I'll get you a
patch, or just look at the following link and make the change yourself,
it's only two lines.
