GSoC 2026 Interest in Grass and Early Contributions

Hello Grass Mentors,

I am Sumit Chintanwar. Excited to see that grass is participating in GSoC ‘26 under the NumFOCUS Umbrella.

I have been exploring the ideas for the GSoC ‘26 cycle and I am interested in:
#1 Parallelization of existing tools,
#3 Add JSON output to different tools in C,
#5 New easy-to-use CLI and API for GRASS GIS,

I have been exploring the grass codebase for a few days now and have already setup the development environment. While Exploring, I have raised a PR solving an issue related to r.geomorphon(uninitialized memory access)(#6924) and am currently trying to figure out another issue related to r.watershed to further deepen my understanding of the codebase.

I would appreciate any advice on how I should best prepare for a strong GSoC proposal. In particular, I would love to hear your suggestions on which of the above ideas might be most suitable for a first-time GSoC contributor, and what kind of work or contributions you would recommend focusing on over the coming weeks.

Thank you for your time and guidance. I look forward to learning from the community and contributing further to GRASS GIS.

Best regards,
Sumit Chintanwar

Thanks for the interest! We still need to update the ideas page, so stay tuned…
Also please be patient with PR reviews. Solving any security issues like the PR you mentioned is a good way to contribute, or look into existing bug reports.
