[GSoC 2026] Introduction: Akshad - GRASS GIS & Python Contributor

Name: Akshad Sonawane

Tell us about yourself: Hi everyone, I’m a third-year Electronics and Telecommunication engineering student from India. Even though my degree is hardware focused, but I spend most of my time working with Python and its data science and machine learning libraries due to my personal interests.

Any OSGeo projects and communities you are involved in: I just recently started getting involved with GRASS GIS. To get a feel for the codebase and testing standards, I recently opened a PR adding some ‘pytest’ and 'mock’ unit tests for the Jupyter utility functions specifically ‘get_region’.

What do you want to learn / contribute? I’m planning to apply for GSoC 2026, and I’m really interested in the “Improve GRASS user experience in Jupyter Notebook” project. I want to contribute mostly on the Python side to help make spatial data workflows easier for data scientists to use. I’m hoping to learn how a large open-source community operates, get feedback from experienced maintainers, and improve my software engineering skills along the way. Beyond just GSoC, I’d love to stick around and keep contributing to real-world problems in this space.

Do you need an OSGeo account? Yes, to set up my user page and keep track of my GSoC progress

Welcome Akshad.

I moved your introduction to Grass developer. You don’t need an OSGeo ID until you get accepted to the GSOC program.
