[Hosting] Update on Datacenter move

All,

I wanted to provide an update on our upcoming datacenter move. We experienced some delays while the Oregon State Datacenter (SDC) addressed administrative issues for onboarding, but we finally received badge access this week!

Below is a summary of the next steps and a rough timeline:

  • Fiber trunk installed between LinkOregon and our racks in the SDC: Scheduled for 12/3/2025.
  • New 40Gbps fiber link added in Corvallis: This link to LinkOregon, dedicated to the pseudo-wire between the two sites, is active and ready but not yet configured.
  • Install new 100G switches and set up pseudo-wire in SDC: Will be done after the racks and fiber trunk are completed.
  • Setup initial network switches and OSL servers in SDC: Starting this week.

Once networking is established, we will prioritize server migrations in batches to ensure service availability:

  1. MySQL, Postgresql, DNS, and other OSL utility systems
  2. OpenStack controller nodes (x86/ppc64le/aarch64)
  3. OpenStack hypervisor nodes (x86/ppc64le/aarch64)
  4. Ceph nodes (x86/ppc64le)
  5. Ganeti hypervisor nodes
  6. Project Co-Located equipment

Most servers are set up for high availability, so downtime should be minimal. However, some OpenStack hypervisor nodes use local storage; VMs hosted on these nodes will likely be offline for the duration of their move (up to 8 hours). We will send a separate email when those moves are scheduled.

While we do not anticipate significant moving this month, the goal is to move most of the internal OSL infrastructure over the coming weeks. Pending that progress, we hope to begin project co-location moves in January. We will reach out to individual projects once a schedule is finalized.

Please note that our capacity to work on tickets will be reduced during these moves. We will prioritize urgent tickets, but please be patient as we execute this datacenter migration.

I will send another update before the end of the month. Please let me know if you have any questions.
