How do I get rid of those white monitors?

Hi, Luc
Regarding the second problem first: You really _don't_ want to run more
than one monitor at a time on the same graphics monitor. Due to the
nature of the XDRIVER and Xwindows, they will be trying to reserve colors
for themselves and they will always be problematic. Instead, use d.frame
to break a single monitor up into multiple frames, each of which can be
displayed to individually.

Your first problem may be caused by having other graphics-intensive
windows open when you start your GRASS monitor; try limiting your windows
to only text-based windows. Also, make sure that you are running in
colormode fixed (d.colormode fixed; d.erase). Good luck!

Greetings!

I have just installed GRASS4.1 binaries on a Linux system and
encountered some problems with colors and monitors while doing some
exercises with spearfish:

1) I strarted a monitor and used d.display, which seems to work fine,
but when I put my cursor on the monitor, the rest of the screen turns
red and orange. It DOES wake you up, but I prefer coffee. How do I
change this? Color related man pages did not give me a clue.

2) Furthermore, I started 3 monitors and first I reduced their size. The
monitors turned from black to white. I tried to display elevation.dem
with d.rast map=elevation.dem on the white monitors and nothing happens.
If I don't reduce a monitr first, and immediately display elevation.dem,
a white field appears on the black background, where elevation.dem is
supposed to show up. Strange thing is that I used to be able to display
elevation.dem. What did I do so that I can not display it anymore or
what are sources of my problem, and how do I solve the problem?

I appreciate your help for getting me on the GRASS roads, after these
first hours of muddling around.

Luc.

PS: I HAD TWO SEND THIS MESSAGE TWICE. IN THE MEANTIME I FOUND OUT THAT MY
SECOND PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE SOLVED IF I RUN FROM THE C SHELL, NOT FROM BASH.
IS THIS CORRECT AND HOW DO I RUN FROM BASH?
