I’m not likely to attend any in-person events. However I might suggest that no matter how formal the group structure becomes that QGIS Canada could support the conference of another geospatial organization where those so inclined could meet in person. This might be the GoGeomatics Expo, Canadian Association of Geographers, the Canadian Cartographic Association…
Also, the FOSS4G conference planned for Calgary in 2020 was cancelled. Perhaps our group already needs a subcommittee to support bringing this event to Canada. I would attend that!
This is an interesting topic indeed. I know I am a dreamer, but I would envision having
QGIS local group chapters in the future.
Ex. The Montreal chapter, probably some users located in the city would like to plan an in person meeting at the coffee shop, the public library or even at the Irish pub, to talk about some more local topics (talking to universities, municipalities, etc) Then share their goals and experience to other chapters. Something along those lines.
My own quiet goal for the group (that I think is very possible) is for
the QGIS Canada group to someday host the international QGIS User
Conference.
By the recent activity here on Discourse, and the great turnout at our
recent monthly meeting, I have no doubt that this is possible.
(I was a keynote speaker at the very first QGIS User Conference, in
Nødebo, Denmark)
No coincidence: I just sent @VxTedxV some stickers so he can promote our
group at the big RV Geomatique event coming up, in Trois-Rivières QC.
Could we someday see Montréal or Québec City host the QGIS User
conference? And then imagine years after that event, opening QGIS and
seeing the splash screen image state “QGIS 7.2 Montréal” (meaning:
another goal is to have our event become a QGIS release name)
Good timing: press release from the QGIS project steering committee
(PSC), on the recent User Conference in the Alps:
Another opportunity, but a small event, is to host a developer meeting
(or “Hackfest”) in Canada. QGIS Hackfests bring the core contributors
together in-person each year, have occurred all over the globe, but not
yet in Canada.
We could aim to host the international QGIS User Conference, in Canada,
someday, along with a Hackfest (same week or so).
