I’m currently an international high school student in Beijing, China. I was admitted to the UIUC CS+GGIS major and will be attending UIUC as a first-year undergraduate student. I have solid programming skills and a STEM background.
What do you want to learn / contribute
I want to learn more about the GIS industry and gain experience using code to build solutions that contribute to the world. Since I will be spending 4 years at UIUC, I will be able to maintain my code, and I am willing to discuss and share ideas with everyone.
I need an OSGeo account for the following (ctrl+click all that apply)
You don’t need an OSGeo account until you get accepted to GSOC. Do you have a project in mind? Are you planning for this year or next year? Note deadline for this year is approaching, March 31st.
I’m actually looking for this year. I know the deadline’s approaching, but I just learned about this summer program on March 26th(It’s a very bad thing). I’ve got very solid programming skills and a strong interest(I was admitted to UIUC CS+GGIS major). I was hoping to give it a try this year. I should start with an easy project, but I’m actually interested in one of the hardest projects - the QGIS project. (I wonder if there is an option that you can accept me into any of the projects. I’d be fine with any of them because I think, no matter what program I’m in, I’d be learning something, and they are all opportunities to explore my interests and open source. I’m eager to learn, and I found this the right platform.)
I have been programming with C++ for 3 years. I will be very free in this period, as it was my summer before college. I am willing and ready to learn whatever skills are needed for the project. I have very good problem-solving and crisis management skills. I’ve led my club through many emergencies and gained lots of experience. My soft skills are the ones that I’m most confident in. So I decided to try it out anyway this year. Although there is not much time left, what else is a high school student more familiar with than deadlines? So I will reply to you immediately as soon as I have an idea.
Do you have any recommendations for students like me? Someone who was new in the field with a strong ability to get started? Any suggestions?
Hoping you can give me some advice. Thank you for your time.
