[Marketing] a banner server?

hi,
i have an quick idea: osgeo banner server.

q: how does it work?
a: all osgeo-related web pages can reserve a space for osgeo
banner/banners. it is simple, pasting a code into the page. later no
maintanance is needed.

q: what is the banner system software?
a: it is gpl-ed http://openx.org/

q: who can use the banner system?
a: any osgeo initiative

q: what is needed to deploy it?
a: domain name and php+mysql-enabled server. afaik we have it all

q: who will deploy it?
a: me, serge

how do you find the idea? any more questions? green light?

thanks,
serge

You skipped an important question, in my opinion:

Why?

Why? In theory a banner server will increase awareness and ultimate uptake of Open Source software. In practice, a banner service running on an OSGeo server is preaching to the converted.

i cannot agree. please notice we do not have to announce osgeo
rationale, but we can e.g. display current events without any
involvement from page authors. they need to put a code once, and later
we can change the content centrally. we can also propose to include
the code on other pages, not only these which belong to osgeo, to help
us promote osgeo-related actions.

cheers -

Sergiusz,

I would hope we would also use it for some cross-promotion of projects.

Best regards,

I can see the value of listing OSGeo related events (conferences) on the website.
(Although I am aware that rotating content is often seen as distracting and annoying).

I wonder if it is possible to include a banner based upon physical location. Eg: only German speaking countries get to see the banner for the German speaking GeoFOSS conference.

banner does not have to rotate, we can have a policy against some
zones. we need to define a few example zones for interested people and
leave them a decision what sort of adverts they want to display

I think your idea is probably good, but haven't thought through all the details.

I expect you will get more lively discussion and targeted feedback after foss4g. Most of the marketing committee (Alex and me) are flat out getting the OSGeoLive out the door this week.

If this is not time critical, I suggest waiting a bit for everyone else to catch up with you. (maybe get a demo up and running).
