[Marketing] Budget cycle 2018

Dear all,

The Board has asked the committees to come up with a budget proposal for 2018.

If you feel specific Marketing/outreach activities are needed, please, reply to this list with:
- budget item, the ‘why’ and the projected cost.
Reply to this list with your answer, so we all have it into one thread.

The Marketing Committee will discuss in the first week of November and collate/prune/combine the input into a comprehensive budget request.

No guarantees it will all be honoured, though.

Thanks and have a great weekend.

Kind regards,
Marc Vloemans

We should certainly budget to roll our banner and printables for local chapters to use at regional foss4g events. I think we could estimate the cost based on the foss4ge and foss4g events last year?

If we were bold, and had a volunteer, we could look at hiring assistance to translate and layout A3 brochure into different languages. I expect this would need to be by request from local chapters. We may wish to set up a small contract with Get Interactive for Pim’s time to perform appropriate layout on the result.

Astrid - was it you who had the idea of an osgeo-in-a-box package that events could get printed and shipped? I would love to see this idea pursued in 2018 (perhaps with some collaboration from OSGeo-Live for USB sticks).

We also experimented with having an OSGeo presence at industry events, which was punishing for out budget and organizational skills. I think Guido was a champion here in setting up opportunities, but I am not sure how to make good on them.

yes. Godd iedea. And maybe we should order many of them and ship them around the word to provide the local chapters with material.

Marc you should have the information
* roll-up
* osgeo table cloth
* OSgeo banner
* brochure
* sticker

we printed for INTERGEO f.e.

a) 500 OSGeo Sticker Outdoor -> +-100 Euro
(140g hochwertiger Qualitätsdruck auf weißer Vinylfolie veredelt mit witterungsbeständiger Schutzfolie matt)

b) Flyer A4 200 -> +-20 EUR

The ordering gets cheaper when you order more. I have a good address, where we can order material in Germany.

Maybe the translation of the brochure should be done by the local chapters themselves. It seam to me that the sometime the translation of the technical text is very tricky and can be missunderstanding if you are not into the topic.

A contract with Get Interactive to layout the result sounds very good.

Yes would be great to go for it in 2018 with all our great new material. I would like to put energy in this topic in the next time. Brian from OSGeo-Live team will help with the USB sticks.

A generous for this for 2018 would be grat. Maybe we can give osgeo-in-a-box packages to delegates in march when many people meet in Bonn for OSgeo Code sprint.

I could do printing in Germany for sticker & more.

We also experimented with having an OSGeo presence at industry events,
which was punishing for out budget and organizational skills. I think
Guido was a champion here in setting up opportunities, but I am not
sure how to make good on them.

Maybe we should make a list of the events that could be interesting.
* looks like annual INTERGEO is one of them (For INTERGEO we can take the budget of FOSSGIS e.V. and do not need more money from OSGeo).

documents before the Italian annual conference

I just looked at the Google sheet proposed budget.

The proposed $10,000 for website upgrades and maintenance is more than I
expected.

Can you explain further what is meant by maintenance and upgrade? If any
of that refers to where the site runs and the software, that budget
should be part of SAC. FYI GetInteractive did offer such a service at
$1200/yr.

Marketing budget should focus on content, including translation, etc.

Thanks,
Alex

It also appeared high to me, the phrasing “maintenance and upgrades” made it sound like infrasturcture/SAC.

Here is my thinking if we did “functionality and enhancements”:

  1. we have many “obvious” gaps that we missed during wireframe review (an example is having a map for events, or the ability to filter service providers by projects they support, etc…).’

See: https://github.com/osgeo/osgeo/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3Aenhancement

I would like to see the recommendation report from get interactive before prioritizing. But I expect there will be some follow up work here to functionality, not content.

  1. GeoForAll was responsible for a large portion of changes / communication / enhancements - I would consider reducing the marketing committee amount and asking GeoForAll to set aside 5000 budget and run their own contract to focus on GeoForAll.

And I agree SAC seems across their relationship with Get Interactive with respect to “maintenance and upgrades”.
