I have all your answers  Good news: I have the font and you might find it in the marketing svn too, it's call The Sans, I think. Bad news: it's proprietary and cannot be freely distributed, but if you need it let's talk. The designers were keen to meet my open standards desirws, but this one slipped by us.

Hope that helps!

It helps a lot, thanks Tyler

On a second review I've found the v2 of the branding guide[1] and it
points to the correct font so sorry for the noise. We're going to need
it sparsely to produce the OSGeo-es logo and probably to produce some
marketing materials (flyers, a second version of our poster[2], etc.).

So if we need to use this font in new texts, how should I proceed? May
I ask you offlist to produce the svg objects of the glyphs or you can
send us the font to use it at our own?

Cheers

I'm not sure you'll need the font that OSGeo is written in that often.
If you notice on all the examples for Projects, etc the text is blue is
a different font. It's that 2nd font which I think we'll need to
standardize more and ensure everyone has access to.

Thanks,
Alex

Proprietary fonts will be an embarrassment for us, and will hinder future OSGeo marketing activities.
I suggest that we select an alternative font ASAP, which we can recommend to anyone wanting to manipulate the logo, and at some point, we migrate to the new font.

Tyler, what would the process be for identifying a new font?

I do agree that we should be using open fonts, but in the context of the
logo an svg seems sufficient. I'm coming from the perspective that the
word OSGeo should not be modified by anyone except for resizing and that
all other words added should be in a different font that we choose,
which of course should be open.

Essentially I'm treating the word OSGeo as a non-editable object ( a
graphic). The only modification of this should be done officially by the
foundation if/when we want to update the logo.

So to clarify, are we talking about "OSGeo" or the font used to put
Project names, chapter names and other modifiers on the page?

Thanks,
Alex

I'll have to double check on which fonts are used where and when, but am under
the gun for some other items at the moment.

I do agree with Alex, on having some barriers is not always bad. Only the
second line of the logo that lists the additional text - e.g. "projects" in
"OSGeo Project" logo should be modified anyway and accessed via SVG or EPS,
etc.

Aside from that, I've got the fonts and can make them available as needed. I
don't see any compelling reason to spend money to avoid embarrassment at this
point, since only a couple people have ever asked for the ability to do this.

My hope is still to have a web-based application that can help members, local
chapters, projects be able to simply punch in some text and let the server do
the rendering. Minimising the necessity of having the source font spread all
over.

Tyler, this is not an urgent job, and can be put on the backburner till you have a moment.
