[Marketing] Input required OSGeo Marketing supplies

Dear Marketing list members,

Regarding Eli's suggestion below that stickers (And perhaps flyers etc too?) be printed centrally and shipped to event organisers and perhaps other OSGeo stakeholders, I require your thoughts on this.
My own initial thoughts, I have already expressed, but perhaps there are other considerations to take into account?

Kind regards,
Marc Vloemans

Maybe 3,000 stickers can be printed and distributed in bulk to local
chapter representatives at FOSS4G? That might be the cheapest way to
distribute them around the world. In my opinion, the more stickers
the better; anywhere someone wants to promote OSGeo is worth a
sticker.

While we can distribute at FOSS4G that is kind of too far away.

I like the idea of printing locally, but given economies of scale it may be wise to print once and send to local chapter for distribution to regional events.

In prior years discussions on the marketing led us to think that we should be outsoucing the production of OSGeo related supplies to external company(s). Eg: http://www.cafepress.com/ (Beyond the idea, we did very little to follow through on this).

We work out the list of products which should be created, provide the source data/image/... then let the external provider manage the selling and delivery process. We can later decide if OSGeo wishes to pay for certain items for certain events.

Cheers, Cameron

This is a new email thread about OSGeo Marketing supplies in general,
not specific to any one request or event. I perhaps wasn't clear in
the first email on that.

I like the idea of printing locally, but given economies of scale it may be
wise to print once and send to local chapter for distribution to regional

This idea was to get the economies of scale and avoid the shipping by
distributing at FOSS4G.

Useful for this discussion some indicative price points;

Shipment NL to eg. Spain and US
<2 Kg ca 10,00 Euro/Spain and 20 Euro/US
2-5 Kg 20,00 Euro/Spain and 35 Euro/US
5-10 Kg 25 Euro/Spain and 60 Euro/US

1000 A7 Full colour stickers (ca 1 Kg total) ca 70 Euro
5000 Idem ca 125 Euro

Also to take into account, the time involved in shlepping the multi-kilograms around, packaging/handling for shipment and admin.

Anyone?

Hello,

sorry - I was absent for a while.

I would do both or all three suggestions:

1. bulk supplies available at FOSS4G (we did this in Bonn at FOSS4G2016 and always do it at FOSSGIS and other conferences. Hopefully like this material was spread over the world. It is cheaper to order x*1000 of stickers than only 100)

2. send material to local chapters or local conference committees
It is a nice personal gesture to get a parcel from OSGeo.

3. let people print their own matterial
provide the link to an external company in then wiki so people can order their own material.

There was a mail about this topic from me in September
https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/marketing/2016-September/003164.html

For 1. and 2.:
I could do the shipping of parcels in the next time and we can have a look how much parcels are requested. If it is getting too much, we could give it to an external company.

Maybe 3,000 stickers can be printed and distributed in bulk to local
chapter representatives at FOSS4G? That might be the cheapest way to
distribute them around the world. In my opinion, the more stickers
the better; anywhere someone wants to promote OSGeo is worth a
sticker.

Astrid,

Do you have the numbers for how much F0SS4G 2016 spent sending
promotional material around. Getting the a box of stickers and postcards
to promote FOSS4G was useful as general marketing. Though the ratio
should lean towards stickers vs postcards. I keep a pile stocked outside
my office at the University (GeoforAll lab).

Thanks,
Alex

Hello,

sorry - I was absent for a while.

I would do both or all three suggestions:

1. bulk supplies available at FOSS4G (we did this in Bonn at FOSS4G2016
and always do it at FOSSGIS and other conferences. Hopefully like this
material was spread over the world. It is cheaper to order x*1000 of
stickers than only 100)

2. send material to local chapters or local conference committees
It is a nice personal gesture to get a parcel from OSGeo.

3. let people print their own matterial
provide the link to an external company in then wiki so people can order
their own material.

There was a mail about this topic from me in September
https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/marketing/2016-September/003164.html

For 1. and 2.:
I could do the shipping of parcels in the next time and we can have a
look how much parcels are requested. If it is getting too much, we could
give it to an external company.

little to follow through on this).

cafepress is more oriented towards selling very small quantities, like
1. Or 10. Also, The OSGeo cafe press has not been doing lots of
business over the years.

We work out the list of products which should be created, provide the
source
data/image/... then let the external provider manage the selling and
delivery process. We can later decide if OSGeo wishes to pay for certain
items for certain events.

They are available here for instance,
http://www.cafepress.com/osgeo/1752240, however, that would be the
worst way to purchase bulk stickers.

Dear Marketing list members,

Regarding Eli's suggestion below that stickers (And perhaps flyers etc
too?) be printed centrally and shipped to event organisers and
perhaps other
OSGeo stakeholders, I require your thoughts on this.

Shipping supplies is not my suggestion. My suggestion is to have bulk
supplies available at FOSS4G. Attendees from chapters all over the
world who attend FOSS4G can take those stickers in bulk with them back
to various regions of the world for distribution at local chapters and
events.

My own initial thoughts, I have already expressed, but perhaps
there are
other considerations to take into account?

Your thoughts on this idea?

Hi Alex,

I agree - stickers are more usefull than postcards. And they are not so heavy.

We spend about 200-300 Euro for sending the material. But I must submit that in most of the cases I made big parcels and maybe a smaller parcel would have been enough and cheaper.

With a focus on spreading the material on our FOSS4Gs, the number of parcels we send to people will decline.
