[Marketing] Introduction

Hello to everybody,

I’m Miguel Montesinos, and I’d like to introduce myself.

I attended last FOSS4G Marketing BOF, following Jeroen’s suggestion, and I think I can try to help to this task.

I’m member of the gvSIG PSC and technical committee. I am also one of the 3 owners of my company (Prodevelop). We are a small-sized company (50+ people) mainly focused on open-source, and I’m the main responsible of marketing tasks in the company.

Being an engineer I’m not a real expert on marketing, so I attended a MBA 5 years ago, where I received some boring lessons on marketing sutff.

I hope to contribute to this essential initiative.

Regards,

Miguel Montesinos

CTO Prodevelop

Welcome aboard Miguel,
It is good to have you closer to this topic.

I've known Miguel for a couple years now and know he'd been a welcome member of the committee. Are you interested in joining formally, for voting, etc?

Hi Tyler,

I just want to help. I really don't know how the work is really done, so
I don't know if I can help the same being or not a member of the
committee.

Being a member would be glad for me, but I let you decide whether you
think I can contribute outside or inside the committee.

I begin to crawl the list archive to see what's being done.

Hi Miguel,
A belated welcome from me too. It is nice to be talking with you again.
I'm +1 to have Miguel added as a committee member. His reputation proceeds him.

With regards to the key topics we should be addressing at the moment, I think they are:

1. Decide how we should allocate the $50K marketing budget that has been allocated to OSGeo. For me, I think we should target our marketing pipeline, starting with an OSGeo Conference Exhibition pack, as per my blog at:
http://cameronshorter.blogspot.com/2008/10/creating-geofoss-distribution-pipeline.html

2. We should develop guidelines selecting events and projects that we sponsor which is broadly based on "What is the cost per convert to OSGeo"

3. We should write a guideline for setting up an OSGeo Exhibition at a conference, including how to source co-sponsorship, where to get material for your booth, how much you can expect from OSGeo, and more importantly, that OSGeo doesn't have budget to cover every stand.

4. Development of a LiveDVD (although that should probably be kept as a separate project)

Hi Tim,
I think you should stop emphasizing we lack any marketing expertise... I think most of us have done marketing work (even if not full time with a formal marketing training) and we have contributed our best efforts on a voluntary basis to OSGeo marketing. Reading and hearing this comment over and over is demotivating to me and puts me at the point of removing myself from the Marketing committee, seriously.

Besides that, I very much welcome new people joining and contributing to this underestimated, important task OSGeo has. So welcome Miguel!

Cheers,
Jeroen

Very sorry Jeroen. I'm probably more channeling my own lack of
expertise and discomfort at trying to help in a marketing role. It's
not something I'm comfortable with, though I do well appreciate the need
for it which is why I'm here. I'll pull my head in on that score

Tim
