[Marketing] Local Chapter policy

Hey,
I just stumbled across this OSGeo presence: http://www.osgeo.nl/

We have not been maintaining all places in the Wiki and CMS where there are references to logo, trademark and brand usage but this sort of slightly bypasses what we initially thought to be a good idea wrt to our trademark:
http://www.osgeo.org/trademark_guidelines

I don't really know what to think or do about this. Opinions?

Bart,
I did not know that you started this web site, you seem to have your own sponsors, etc.:
http://www.osgeo.nl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=52&Itemid=56

Is there any formal relation to OSGeo wrt funding, usage of the brand, some formal connection, report to OSGeo.org, etc.? There seems to be not link from http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Dutch to http://www.osgeo.nl/ either?

Please don't get me wrong, I am all about do-ocratic meritocracies but maybe having a slightly more tight and visible connection to OSGeo.org could help foster our marketing efforts. For example I cannot find any link on the entrance that would point to OSGeo.org although you have included the logo.

Hmmm. Actually this comes right at the wrong time as there is a somewhat heated discussion going on whether OSGeo should appear as organizer of training events (see the Board list). Seeing an address seminar@osgeo.nl suggests just that.

Best regards, Arnulf.

I don't know What To Do either, but it certainly raises questions and is
precisely why we made the point of having guidelines...

(but yeah, a polite email to osgeo.nl is the right way to start the
dialog, though)

Arnulf,

FYI, there is now OSGeo chapter in Poland (yet) but I registered http://osgeo.pl domain and redirected it to Polish translation of http://osgeo.org

AFAIK, I've told Tyler about it but I believe Marketing Committee should be told as well.

good point. As GFOSS.it, OSGeo lc for IT, would like very much to elaborate some guidelines for a better cooperation among groups.
all the best.

And there are various other local chapter web sites and events that I am convinced the Marketing Committee knows nothing of. Can an event just make a pointer back to OSGeo's site and use the brand? Seems so and has been acceptable without more bureaucracy.

As far as I can tell, osgeo.nl isn't claiming to represent a local chapter - is it? It looks like an event that has some OSGeo software training. If so, then perhaps having the logo there makes sense, though with some tighter track-back to OSGeo.

Tyler,

I *think* that official chapters have quite a bit of latitude in describing
their events as OSGeo events without seeking any particular additional
approval from the Marketting committee, board, etc. I'm inclined to
give "chapters in formation" some latitude in this regard too, though
they don't really have any official status.

So, for instance, we members of the Ottawa Chapter have been considering
geocamp an OSGeo activity on the basis of a bunch of positive grunts of
support at a past pub meeting where it was discussed.

Best regards,
