[Marketing] marketing foss4g 2016: materials and infrastructure

HI marketing committee (and possibly other marketeers),

In the preparations for FOSS4G 2016 we are gathering ideas for marketing materials.

Across our minds came items such as:

  • beermats (with OSGeo logo) - to be distributed in the café in Bonn!

  • Rubik cube’s (with osgeo logo, and logos of projects), for sale

  • RFID card blocking card holder

We even thought of starting an OSGeo webshop for this!

All of these could be made in FOSS4G 2016 editions, but are also possible in a more generic OSGeo-style.

We would like to hear what the generic OSGeo marketing ambitions are. If that’s close to zero, we’ll focus on 2016-specifc marketing.

(Perhaps this generic marketing ambition is subject to change depending on the outcome of the Board’s face2face meeting in January?)

Kind regards,

Gert-Jan

Hi Gert-Jan,
The marketing committee is quite dormant, so pretty much any suggestion you put forward which you are prepared to make happen yourself will be fine.

In the past, OSGeo has made use of cafepress for shirts, hats, etc:
http://www.cafepress.com/osgeo

You might want to look into that, or find something similar.

I’d suggest also consider distributing an OSGeo-Live USB. (8 Gig or larger). This is a great marketing pipeline for each of the projects on OSGeo-Live. It can also be used in workshops. And delegates can use it when they go back to their organisations and are asked to give a presentation about the conference to their workmates. The OSGeo-Live presentation is on the USB.

Seem to be the in thing at conferences these days.

+1 we should re-institute a shop for OSGeo and Foss4g stuff. Some
research should be done to find the best current place to do such things.

Alex, Cameron,

"In the past made use of Café-press"
"Re-institute?"

Looking at http://www.cafepress.com/osgeo is seems to me like the online OSGeo store is still up-and-running. I suppose it's not a fake webshop that tries to capture my VISA card information

Hi Gert-Jan,

I would agree that unfortunately the OSGeo marketing committee is non-existent, which is always an issue around event time.

Let's definitely speak of this in person at the Board meeting (and OSGeo.nl meetup) in January. For Bonn, when you said "beermat", my brain immediately awoke: in Canada we have these things we call "coolie-cups" that you wrap around the beer, to keep it cold while you hold it in your hand. Is that what you mean by "beermat"? I would absolutely love a coolie-cup with OSGeo & FOSS4G logos!!!! Let's do it!!! It would be a huge hit with FOSS4G attendees.

Talk soon,

-jeff

Ah ok "beermat" is another name for what we call "coasters", to put under the drink. The OSGeo sprint in Vienna a few years ago gave out coasters.

But I think a coolie-cup would be awesome. It seems they are also called beer "koozies": http://www.customink.com/custom/custom-koozies

Hi Jeff,

With beermat is meant a (either round or square) piece of cardboard to put under your beerglass (to protect the table)
But a coolie-cup is a good idea as well
Although in Holland, we tend to drink so fast that a coolie-cup is hardly needed

Gert-Jan
