[Marketing] OSGeo event in Portugal

[Apparently this message has never been distributed in the marketing list;
sorry if received more than once]

Hi all,

I've talk with Arnulf at Cape Town, and he suggested to use this mailing
list to announce and ask support/guidelines to our first OSGeo event in
Portugal.

I've already put the event in the wiki, available at:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Open_Source_for_GIS_Meeting_in_Portugal
This small description is in English, but the event will be in Portuguese.
The event website is http://www.sigaberto.org

Basically, we don't need additional financial support (we were able to
have enough sponsors), but we would like to:

- invite someone from the OSGeo organization to be present at the opening
session (and give a talk)
- have the OSGeo booth during the event, with some material related with
OSGeo (brochures, the FOSS4G DVD if copies left, and so on)
- additionally, OSGeo T-shirts for volunteers would be very welcome

We already invited informally Tyler Mitchell, who will be in Malaga at
about the same time. But it didn't seem easy to get him in Águeda, because
flights from Malaga to Oporto or Lisbon are quite complicated. Of course
he his very welcome, but if he can't make it, please try to find someone
else able to come.

We are available to discuss further issues with you all. I'm sorry for
this announcement so late. We are just learning how these things should be
done.

Regards,

Jorge

Hi all, catching up on my email after a week away.
A couple ideas on this:
* who has the booth banners and any other "left overs" from FOSS4G? Tim? Ari? Perhaps those can be forwarded to Jorge.
* re: shirts - same as above. I can't ship any from here in time.
* there is some (English only) handouts available to print here. I'd love to see a spanish version:

Hope that helps! Let me know if you need more,

I've got one of the banners. Gavin was left with the other for local
use in South Africa. Perhaps we need to invest in some more over time
with each local chapter that looks like being able to make good use of
them having a basic set of materials.

* re: shirts - same as above. I can't ship any from here in time.

I don't believe there were many left. Certainly what was left was not
evenly distributed wrt sizes. Again, I think we may need to get more
done up.

I've got some of the A5 sized handouts, but probably not enough to make
it worth shipping particularly as they will almost certainly get used
down here anyway.

Live DVD's: We used up all that we produced. You could burn more
copies of the DVD as is
(http://download.osgeo.org/livedvd/FOSS4G-2008-LiveDVD-Alpha4.iso),
though if you hold off for a day or so I'll see if there are any
important bug fixes that are pending.

Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake
when you make it again.

Thanks Tyler,

1) We can translate (and improve!) the handouts to be printed locally.

2) We are offering a 2Gb usb pen to the participants, and we can also put more info about OSGeo (maybe a index.html page on the pen that points to some specific resources within OSGeo and OSGeo wiki).

3) It is complicated to send anything in such a short period. Forget about t-shirts and banners and alike.

4) But we would like to have someone (a human!) from OSGeo. Who is near by? I know you will be in Spain, but busy in the same days (urh!). Can you find someone willing to come? Maybe from Spain, Italy, France, Germany? We can support the travel expenses.

5) Finally, if you can do it, please put the event in the OSGeo web page.

Anyway, thanks for answering.

Best regards,

Jorge

Jorge,

The artwork and iso for the Live DVD are both available on:
http://download.osgeo.org/livedvd/

The artwork is there as a jpg and pdf. Alpha4 is the latest ISO. We
don't yet have a versioning plan or any firm date on "version 1". I'm
not even sure what we will call it when it does get there!

Tim
