Jody,

Did you by any chance create the OSGeo Google+ account? I'm
wondering how we ought to manage it. Based on the following
post by Robert Scoble I'm a bit nervous that managing it will be
challenging.

I'm thinking we need an active effort to keep information
flowing via the OSGeo Google+ and Twitter accounts at higher
velocity than I might do for the main announce list, and the
main web site news posts.

We should at the very least squat a Google+ page until we figure out
what to do with it. In the past we've also tried to keep up with
facebook's ever changing landscape but that's only been mildly
successful. I agree that we probably need a volunteer who specifically
wants to be the Social Media kingpin and handle Google+,Twitter,Facebook
etc.

Then we'll need to have a discussion to set the rules about what should
be sent via those channels.

Hi Frank:

Yes I did; figured I created the OSGeo thread on google wave; I may as well try my luck with google+.

There is some evidence that several people can manage a page; but I have not found a volunteer to try that on. Do you mind if I try that with your google+ id?

  • My thought was to have the page follow “charter members” and call it day.

  • The Pages such as OSGeo do list their followers; which is half the fun of people following a page like OSGeo.

Thus far I spent ages trying to find (and then finally create) a square OSGeo logo; uploaded a few pictures; and filled in links to the website etc…

There are requests by google to cross link this post to our website with a goggle+ badge (http://www.google.com/support/plus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&p=direct_connect&answer=1711199). However the expected functionality (type "+Open Source Geospatial Foundation’) already works so I cannot see the value.

For me it is an anti-goal to give special treatment to charter members
beyond their role as a group of voters. I feel that it denigrates other
volunteers/members. So I'd prefer we be more permissive.

However, I do not understand the point of the OSGeo page "following" people.

it makes them visible as associated with OSGeo?

I was contemplating doing that but hesitated unless we do similar things
for other social media. I don't want it to be perceived that OSGeo is
overly pro-Google - particularly not when it would be a conflict of
interest for me - at least in theory. But I do think it makes sense to
promote association with OSGeo via Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Linkedin
on the main OSGeo page as broader "social" strategy.

I really wish we could have one Google+ page which responded to both
+OSGeo and +Open Source Geospatial Foundation, but I presume that is not
possible.

Actually I am not sure there is a point at all. The pages seem to list people that are following them; that is all people need to feel part of OSGeo.
I will remove the page following people.

Apparently I have to wait[1] for that feature to be rolled out.

"At first, whoever creates the page initially will also be the page administrator. No one else will be able to admin that page after them, at first. Nor can that page be transferred to someone else.

Multiple administrator support is promised in the near future, but until it arrives, it seems important that if your company has a social media manager, that person should be the one to create the account."

So we wait for a bit.

Feature looks like it is rolled out now (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2011/12/google-update-adds-subtle-tweaks-enhancements.ars). However I do not seem to have the option; I expect the page needs to be verified or something before we get more options.

I will keep watching.
