[Marketing] Proposal: osgeo website emergency quickfix

Hey folks, I am making a proposal below for a quick fix, please respond with a +1 and we can unblock an issue that has become urgent.

Discussion welcome, but growing scope is not. I was present during the website project so I know some of the graphical design tradeoffs in order to answer questions.

Thanks,
Jody

Problem:

So some pages of the website have run into problems (with updates and changes) and need some emergency graphic design decisions.

The https://www.osgeo.org/sponsors/ page is a bit broken right now, with logos displaying in a single column, and square logos ending up with too much visual weight making for an inconsistent visual.

Notes:

Sponsor Page Quickfix Proposal

  • Goal is a good single page presentation, with logos given representation based on sponsorship logo. Logos within a tier should have similar visual impact.
  • Restore columns: The https://foss4g.asia/2023/our-sponsors-partners/ page is similar to what we started with, with visibility based on sponsorship tier.
  • Logo scaling for fair visual impact: The https://foss4gna.org/ page is a good example of fair logo scaling with a perfect rectangle provided for each logo, with a margin for white space so each logo can breath, both square and rectangle logos end up with similar space.
(This is an example of how to be fair, I am not recommending the rectangles be visible as is done on the foss4g-na site)

Planning
If we do get a budget for 2024 we should assemble a work package of outstanding requests (review emergency fix, mastodon social logos, committee page template etc…)

I strongly wish to avoid doing isolated quick fixes, it is so easy to do small changes that make sense for one objective, and damage the effectiveness of an individual page. Example: some sponsors get color logos, having logos moving in the footer, etc…

The sponsors page is definitely screaming for some work. Thanks for raising the concern.

Does this look better?

https://dev.www.osgeo.org/sponsors/

Thanks for looking at this Vicky, it is an important topic but not something we can do in isolation.

The marketing list is our best source of folks aware of brand sensitivities, and nothing is so emotion filled as our sponsors page.

I really want to get the go-ahead here before doing any design.

It is required to have a visual plan - once we have a plan we can prototype with a design / goal in mind.

Feedback on https://dev.www.osgeo.org/sponsors/L

  • If the square logos get too close to the top edge legibility are lost.

  • If the wide logos get too close to the sides legibility is lost

  • Square logos like “Kaplan” have so much more visual space then logos like “ip2location” it can lead to unfairness

For reference see how logos are accommodated in blocks for display on booth banner.

  • Camptocamp which is more squat, so it does not use the full width to avoid appearing too large (the “Kaplan” effect above)
  • Each logo has about the same amount of background and content pixels
  • QFieldCloud has the hardest time with this balance, as not all of the logo has the same contrast.

Goals In design terms the idea is to keep an consistent amount of whitespace margin around each logo size

“Put your logos in an invisible grid to quickly fix alignment issues. Resize them within the grid as necessary.”
  • Assuming each logo in a teir is assigned the same sized block
  • Minimum margin is required for legibility
  • If you imagine a radial line scanning clockwise from the centre of the, recording the percentage of background vs logo pixels, the average should be the same for each logo
  • An approximate could be done based on aspect ratio of the logo, probably with CSS actually

Let me think about it!

Vicky I believe if I recreate the sponsor logos following the example of the original designers your change will solve the problem.

I will work on this over the weekend; I am not sure if staging synchronized content with production.

Hi Jody,
I am working on staging

https://dev.www.osgeo.org/

No, database is not in sync and Branches are different.
When changes are going to be done using the admin panel, I normally do my tests there, take notes and then recreate them on production.

In this case I will update the images, perhaps writhing with treasure to do so (if I cannot find good logos).

It is a challenge because board and treasurer maintains sponsor relationships; but marketing committee has some constraints on what is needed visually.

I wonder if I can make some kind of “sponsor pack” PDF for the board and treasurer to share.
