[Marketing] Question about OSGeo "Label"

Hi list members !

Working for different Open Source applications based on several Open
Source Component, mostly OSGeo components, and mutualized between
different actors from a same sector (for exemple, naturalist or marine
actors, ...), I was recently asked if this kind of application could be
labelling by OSGeo.

I don't mean those applications should process the actual incubation,
but that OSGeo could propose to this kind of mutualized and Open Source
based applications a way to be labellized. The question is : do you
think it's the mission of OSGeo to propose such a label ? If yes, on
wich criteria, following wich process ?

I think it could procure some good marketing effects for OSGeo, not only
to mutualize at a component level, but also to mutualize at an
application level, more focused on users than developers, in order to
touch a larger "market".

Best regards,

David

Thanks for describing it further. This reminded me of the "Intel Inside" strategy of getting branding onto computers that used their chip. The idea of having an OSGeo Inside sort of logo has been kicked around a bit before. I think it would be a great way to implement a similar concept. Do you think something like that would help in the way you describe?

Hi David, It's good to hear from you. I think I know what you mean,
but would mind explaining a bit more, maybe an example of how you
might see such an idea implemented or being used? It sounds interesting.

Hi Tyler ! Thanks for your response

The main example is : GeoSource -
https://adullact.net/projects/geocatalogue. GeoSource is strictly based
on GeoNetwork catalog. GeoSource add some non generic functionnalities
like the French ISO 19139 profil support and a specific interface (more
simple than the one offered by GeoNetwork > for more simple use).

This project is strictly based on an OSGeo Component and still
compatible with GeoNetwork SVN.
This project add some specificities to GeoNetwork that must be kept in
this application and not in the GeoNetwork trunk.

GeoSource is used by a large community in France (about 500
organisations and a 1000+ community is expected before the end of 2010
- it's not official numbers - just mine  )

It would be very interesting for OSGeo to labelized such an application
based on GeoNetwork because OSGeo could be more visible in this big
user's community.
In the other hand, the project chief of GeoSource could find an interest
to labelize his project : in order to show his user's community, he
respects some criterias like : ascent compatibility with the trunk,
generic development comited in the trunk, etc.

This kind of application is not concerned by OSGeo incubation process.
Nevertheless, it should be interesting to create a new way to put an
official Label to some applications wich respect some specific crietrias
and that aren't component but applications for end users.

It's also available for more complex application like an SDI application
including : GeoNetWork, GeoServer, Open Layers, PostGIS, ... The idea is
not to have only one SDI project labelized by OSGeo but any application
that respect some principles ...

I hope it is more clear  Sorry for my approximate english (I'm
working to improve it! )
