[Marketing] RE: Malaysia Geospatial Forum 2012

Hi,

I am forwarding this mail since Arnulf is off and on the Net and since Sarah Hisham is not on this list. Not exactly clear to me what else they expect from OSGeo.org but at least a speaker is requested.

As the Dutch Language OSGeo Chapter we're busy trying to organize (speakers for) an FOSS/OSGeo seminar at the

Dear Mr. Christl,

We have yet to get any response on below invitation. As it is only 2 months
until the event, it would help to confirm at the earliest so OSGeo won't
miss out much on pre-event marketing.

Thank you,
Sarah

Folks,
OSGeo is invited to support the "Open Source Geospatial" track as part of
the "Malaysia Geospatial Forum" [1]. I cannot go myself because I am on the
other side of the world at that time. Ideally we can activate someone
trusted in the area to give an introduction to Open Source in general and
OSGeo specifically. Maybe someone can later post this on Discuss to ask
there?

We have the global version of this event series (the Geospatial World Forum
[2]) in Amsterdam this summer which will be coordinated together with the
OSGeo NL Chapter [3]. The program outline for the "Open Source Seminar" on
April 25th, 2012 starts with a Keynote Address, the recent development in
the software and ends with examples of
successful open source implementations (case studies) potentially
followed by a panel discussion.

The model of an OSGeo Local Chapter drafting the program, activating and
QA'ing speakers works perfectly here. With the currently emerging role of
OSGeo ambassadors I can also imagine that some expenses could be reimbursed
by OSGeo - but this is still in the pipeline, so do not count on it yet.

My experience with events organized by Geospatial Media and Communications
have so far been excellent and the interest in continuing to cooperate on
this end are mutual.

As I will be mostly offline for the better part of the next two months I
would appreciate if the marketing team could pick this up and forge on.

Side note:
Some time ago I sent a similar mail to this list regarding the planning of
the global event in Amsterdam but there was little reaction. I do believe
that this is an important aspect of the work done through OSGeo and would
really like to see it being taken up by a broader set of people. So please
do not shy away but be bold.

I also sent this to the Education list because it has an educative aspects,
albeit different to what universities typically do. The Edu list did not
pick it up at all which is why I fall back to the Marketing Committee. If
you think this type of event support can be taken on by another group within
OSGeo please go ahead.

Best regards,
Arnulf

Greetings, Mr. Christl.

Hope end of the year treats you well.

We're organizing a Seminar on "Open Source Geospatial" as part of our agenda
in Malaysia Geospatial Forum next year. Although Open Source is not yet a
favourite in our country, but I could say the awareness is gradually
increasing. As an effort to increase the profile of this Seminar, I would
like to propose an endorsement from OSGeo. We will display OSGeo's logo on
our website and all promotional materials of the Forum.

Malaysia Geospatial Forum is scheduled on *6-7 March 2012 in Melaka* (a
State two-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur). If you happened to be in the region
around this time, it would be our pleasure to have you as speaker as well.

I attached the Forum flyer for your reference. You may visit our website
www.malaysiageospatialforum.org <http://www.malaysiageospatialforum.org>
for updated info.

Wish you a very merry season's greetings and happy new year!

Best regards,

Sarah

Hello Sarah,
I'm one of the members of the OSGeo Marketing committee, and also coordinate the packaging of ~ 50 Geospatial Open Source applications as part of OSGeo-Live, http://live.osgeo.org .

We have compiled a "lightening" presentation which covers the breadth of Geospatial Open Source applications, which is often presented by either a keynote speaker, or by one of the conference organisors, or by one of the OSGeo-Live developers, at conferences around the world.
You can see it here:

Do you know someone who you think would be good at giving this presentation? If not, I can ask around to see if there is another OSGeo member who may be attending, or who is in the region and can make the conference.

Feel free to adjust the presentation to meet your local requirements, or to ask questions of me as you see fit.

Sarah,
The key OSGeo conferences, such as FOSS4G, give copies of the OSGeo-Live DVD (or sometimes a OSGeo-Live USB) to each delegate attending the conference. This DVD contains 50 of the best geospatial open source applications, pre-installed with sample data, a quickstart, and project overview. You can see the documentation here: http://live.osgeo.org
It is also used by many of the Open Source workshop leaders who base their workshops around the contents on the DVD.
Would you be interested in handing out OSGeo-Live DVDs at your conference? It will cost you ~ $1 to $2 per delegate.

Tuong,
That would be a very nice touch - to be running the OSGeo-Live presentation from an OSGeo-Live Virtual Machine.

I'll be interested to hear if you decide to open up any of the applications or similar during the presentation. (Unfortunately, this probably won't work too well, as I suspect it won't be fast enough, and you will likely run out of RAM after opening a few applications)

Seminar" on April 25th, 2012 starts with a Keynote Address, the recent
development in the software and ends with examples of
successful open source implementations (case studies) potentially
followed by a panel discussion.

The model of an OSGeo Local Chapter drafting the program, activating
and QA'ing speakers works perfectly here. With the currently emerging
role of OSGeo ambassadors I can also imagine that some expenses could
be reimbursed by OSGeo - but this is still in the pipeline, so do not
count on it yet.

My experience with events organized by Geospatial Media and
Communications have so far been excellent and the interest in
continuing to cooperate on this end are mutual.

As I will be mostly offline for the better part of the next two months
I would appreciate if the marketing team could pick this up and forge on.

Side note:
Some time ago I sent a similar mail to this list regarding the
planning of the global event in Amsterdam but there was little
reaction. I do believe that this is an important aspect of the work
done through OSGeo and would really like to see it being taken up by a
broader set of people. So please do not shy away but be bold.

I also sent this to the Education list because it has an educative
aspects, albeit different to what universities typically do. The Edu
list did not pick it up at all which is why I fall back to the
Marketing Committee. If you think this type of event support can be
taken on by another group within OSGeo please go ahead.

Best regards,
Arnulf

Greetings, Mr. Christl.

Hope end of the year treats you well.

We're organizing a Seminar on "Open Source Geospatial" as part of our
agenda
in Malaysia Geospatial Forum next year. Although Open Source is not yet a
favourite in our country, but I could say the awareness is gradually
increasing. As an effort to increase the profile of this Seminar, I would
like to propose an endorsement from OSGeo. We will display OSGeo's
logo on
our website and all promotional materials of the Forum.

Malaysia Geospatial Forum is scheduled on *6-7 March 2012 in Melaka* (a
State two-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur). If you happened to be in the
region
around this time, it would be our pleasure to have you as speaker as
well.

I attached the Forum flyer for your reference. You may visit our website
www.malaysiageospatialforum.org<http://www.malaysiageospatialforum.org>
for updated info.

Wish you a very merry season's greetings and happy new year!

Best regards,

Sarah
