Thanks Jody. One note, its not explicitly stated that the board is
considering $30k (just implied by $50k - $20k to be raised).

Per our discussion this morning, I started collecting all the
sub-brands, properties etc into this doc.

This doc is public editable, so go ahead and add anything I missed.

You are correct I was not explicitly stating that, for the same reason the marketing budget is shown as one lump sum in the draft budget available on the wiki. We are still waiting on your clarification with SAC, and the boards final budget next week, etc…

I have drafted a call for sponsorship that includes “Digital asset rebranding and website reboot” as an initiative for sponsorship. My description could use your feedback:

  • Digital asset rebranding and website reboot: The marketing committee has volunteered to undertake an EOI process to revamp the OSGeo visual and online presence in 2017. This is significant user-focused undertaking that would greatly benefit from your support!

I would love to have a wiki page, or a draft EOI, to link to (similar to how I can link to the foss4g europe, foss4g boston and code sprint websites).

The board meeting is tomorrow, I expect the above document to be sent out at that time.

Hi all,

Has the Marketing Committee decided on whether OSGeo Sponsors must be
at least in some tangential way related to open source or geospatial
software? I think that we should only accept relevant sponsors and
have the option to decline sponsorships.

QGIS has a good example of a policy,
http://qgis.org/en/site/getinvolved/governance/sponsorship/sponsorship.html#qgis-sponsorship-program
(at the bottom):

Warning
Acceptance of sponsorship offers is at the discretion of the QGIS PSC.
We reserve the right to decline offers of sponsorship if the
sponsoring organisation or party seems to be at odds with the ethos of
our project. For example offers from marketing companies that have
nothing to do with GIS / spatial services, or offers where we have
reason to believe the presence of the sponsors logo and marketing
materials on our site and other materials will degrade the experience
of our users will be declined.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Best regards, Eli

This is a rather bold and clear policy. A simple policy (if we don't
anticipate problems) could be as short as "...subject to approval."

I agree the entire stipulation is not required, just "subject to board
approval" would work.

I'm not on the Board list and think that it would be more effective

Sorry to bring up a tangential item on the thread. Getting back to
what you wrote:

"This is ****a**** significant user-focused undertaking that would
greatly benefit from your support!" You forgot an "a" (or remove "is"
and rework).

"This is a significant user-focused undertaking that would greatly
benefit from your support!" Might sounds a little passive although it
does keep the rebranding as the subject. You could try different
orders like:

"Your (valuable) support assists (enables? allows?) significant
user-focused undertakings such as the digital asset rebranding and
website reboot"

You've got the important components covered so what you've got or
similar should be good.

+1 on “subject to board approval”, but I think that it is important to provide guidelines on what is and is not acceptable. Otherwise it makes it very hard for future boards to assess whether a sponsor is suitable or not. You don’t want to be publicly discussing whether a company is suitable or not which potentially may be damaging their reputation (something you don’t want to be doing to sponsors).

Possible text:

“Acceptance of sponsorship is at the discretion of the OSGeo Board, who will ensure alignment with OSGeo’s vision and protection of OSGeo’s reputation.”
